As I understand it, in the latest update hidden stickies will remain hidden.

That's good, I support that. However, there is an inherent flaw in that design.

This recognizes the fact stickies are stickies because they are more important that regular posts.

So perhaps when one or more stickies have been updated, up top where it says Show Stickies a message should be added. Something like "New Updates Available."

People can unhide them, check the updated stickies, then hide them again.

A small change, low priority, but it might be good to let people know the important info in stickies has been updated.

Thanks. That is a "known issue".

Stickies are only hidden on the listing page, new posts to them are shown in new posts and RTAT, and if you follow a sticky you'll get notifications of course. Hiding a sticky does not prevent one reading it or posting to it.

I have added a sticky hide command to log a timestamp for the exact reason you describe above.

But I have not decided what is the best way to show that new posts have come after that. If the info is added to the "Show stickies (7)" it should be something subtle. Screen estate is precious on that area so it should rather be

"Show stickies (7)
or
"Show stickies (new posts)
than
"Show stickies (7) New Updates Available."

Other option would be to force stickies shown when they have new posts, but that could not be logical to do only for one sticky of several, and showing all could get irritating.

If there's a new sticky that all members should see or a new update that all members should see, won't it be placed in one of the forums where stickies can't be hidden? A member who has hidden the General Photography Talk stickies, for example, presumably doesn't care to be notified of new posts to Show Your Ride. There are other kinds of stickies, to do with changes in rules and formats, that are in Software Talk and Forum Talk because they're the important kind that Picture NC is presumably talking about.

Agree with all you said. My thoughts:

"Show stickies (7)
or
"Show stickies (new posts)
than
"Show stickies (7) New Updates Available."

Other option would be to force stickies shown when they have new posts, but that could not be logical to do only for one sticky of several, and showing all could get irritating.

Would probably be best, BUT people won't know what the red indicator is for. They would ask the question constantly in the Forum forums, causing mods to expend unnecessary time answering. And if you think users will read a guide or Amass instruction manual? Ha ha ha ha. Good one !

A better choice than just the red number. Being literal with users creates less questions.

Yes, my suggestion is longer but it was based upon being completely literal with users so that they never have to ask questions.

And yes, dropping all stickies down because one was updated would be irritating.... and back where you were before the last update.

Probably the best option would be to show only the sticky that was updated. Unfortunately, that involves more programming. Plus, it WILL generate the random "why is one sticky showing / refusing to hide" question.

Good luck.

Hey, "Stickies" are valuable resources. Maybe instead of over-crowding the Sticky sections, we have a couple stickies for each section: one "general purpose" one that everyone should be familiar with, rules and such, and then one that has links to threads that pertain tho the relevant section with links that can be valuable and linked to!!

Another complication for this sticky subject. :-) What will the signaling system say when a new topic is made a sticky?

Interesting thought. I guess a new sticky is, in essence, and update to stickies, so it would be flagged as an update. The thread title would bolded to indicate the new sticky (just like any thread title would be bolded if a new post were added)

If I hide stickies, I'll miss the bolded thread title.

Ummmm. That's the original point of this thread - some way to indicate stickies have been updated when people have stickies hidden.

Yes. What I'm getting at is, how would bolding the thread title alert people that there was a new sticky if they don't see the titles of stickies? And if you haven't opened the stickies, or if you opened them long ago but not recently, all their titles are bolded.
