This, I think, is a young female budgie (budgerigar) which showed up in the yard today. At first she was following the parent sparrows as they were teaching their youngsters to feed from the ground. They tolerated the budgie but didn't feed her. Then she went and climbed around on the chain link fence for a few minutes. After a while she landed on top of the feeder but didn't seem to know how to feed from the perches below.
I decided to see how she would do if I approached ... I got within about eight feet and took the photo below. She seemed pretty tame. I came back with some seed in my hand and was able to get within a couple feet. She seemed interested in the food but spooked and flew up to a branch above the feeder. I let her be for an hour or so and then she was back on the top of the feeder. I approached again with some smaller seed, millet I think, and was able to place some next to her on top of the feeder. After a minute she began eating with gusto and a few minutes later she would take food from between my fingers. A little later and I was able to stroke the top of her head and also her chest. She then flew up to a nearby branch and that was where she was when I last checked on her after the sun went down.
Not sure where it all goes tomorrow but it made for an interesting afternoon.
PS - This seems to be a domesticated budgie, though I have not seen a band on either leg as of yet. Anybody know how likely it would be for this little bird to survive on her own?
