♂ and ♀ sapsuckers, with nest hole.

I can hear the babies near the door, but I can't see them yet, perhaps in a couple days. They are very loud, and relentless. Those poor parents, they feed the chicks and quite literally, they start chirping 2 seconds later.

The male. He has a redder neck, and has a more distinct yellow stripe.

These are great shots! I'm watching the same thing across from my house, but your photos are so much better than mine. The male Sapsucker gets suet for the chicks, but the female does not. I need to work harder to get a better angle on the opening like you have here. Beautiful set!

I set up my tripod and pointed it at the hole. I backed off a little to give myself some room for error. Then I set my iso higher then I would normally go (1600iso) (sometimes 800) I found I needed at "least" 1/2000's more is better. Then I used a remote trigger because if I looked through the viewfinder iI couldn't react fast enough. So I "anticipated" when the bird would enter the frame. I went with a narrow aperture (f/8-f/10) to keep the focal plane wide so that if it came in a little in front or back of the hole there would be a bit of breathing room. Even still, there were a heck of a lot of missed shots.

I can't wait to see the chicks. It's killing me to be at work and not at the nest right now, lol. I want to be there the moment they emerge.

A great series and very well photographed Trevor. We have a pair of them in the neighborhood, but they haven't cooperated very well to get any decent photos. Great to see these.
