Thanks Dennis
Yes about 5 metres on this one.
The other I posted elsewhere was about 20 metres.
I was surprised how this one didn't seem to notice me.
I didn't try closer but just left quietly

That's been my experience with Echidnas, too. Maybe they are confident that their spines will deter any attackers? I once knelt alongside a very busy Echidna that had found an ants' nest under a log and was determined to eat every single one of them, paying me no attention whatsoever. Needless to say, I didn't have a camera with me

Great photos. Your echidna's seem to have much more hair between their spines than on the mainland - or maybe their spines are shorter?

I just looked back through the Echidna posts and yours are a lot darker and seem more spikey.
Bit hard to tell the length difference, but that could also be true.

They've probably evolved more hair to keep warm in Tassie. Certainly more hair than those up here too.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Hadn't thought about that. Very valid.
These live at 600 to 800 metres plus. Others at 1200 metres.
It gets COLD

We came across this Swamp snake (or Black-bellied swamp snake) on a walk in the Lamington National Park last week. We estimated it to be approx. 60 cms long.

These snakes are not highly venomous, but they do bite and victims may suffer pain and localised swelling, but it is not considered deadly to humans.

However, I kept my distance as I am no expert…:-)

Cheers

Dennis

Female (L) and Male (R) Richmond birdwing butterflies.

This was taken in the Lamington National Park. The Richmond birdwing is one of Australia's largest butterflies with a wingspan of up to 16 cm in females and 13 cm in males.

Cheers

Thanks Richard! The little Ringtails are still fairly common in the suburbs of Brisbane... perhaps even more so than Brushtails where I am :)

I had to grab the pool net and land this Eastern Water Dragon to get him out of our backyard pool before my Wife could have a swim.

Cheers
