I'll let you collect all the data to determine if it's popular or not...looking forward to the results :)

Yea, I'm not on a scientific mission here either. If it is in fact popular on a crop, great. If not I suspect the length and lack of IS contribute.

Personally I use my crop a lot - probably almost as much as my FF - but very rarely with the 135L. So I'm going to say in my perfectly scientific case of a sample size of one (the only one I actually know 100% to be true) that it is not popular on a crop.;-)a

out of curiousity roughly what sort of distance from the model are you having to be for a shot like this with the 135mm on a crop sensor?

Approximately 10 meters. So 30 feet roughly.

I shoot a 200 F2.8L on full frame (Yea, I use the 200 instead of the 135, hah), it's pretty much the equivalent field of view as you'd find using a 135L on APS-C.

Very best,

you can use this to see what distance you'd have to be away to frame a specific dimension...

go to the dimensional field of view calculator...i think 30ft is right around there, but maybe a bit short...it would only frame 5' in height...so assuming with heels she's like 5"8, plus another 8" inches or so above, and below it's closer to 38ft...i'd guess...but this is all without knowing the height of the model, she could easily be shorter or taller

The IQ of the 135L is just right and it's a great FL for portraits on a FF. While it's field of view is reduced on a crop, I would think it's IQ would be quite good. I skimmed through the posts debating about the 135L vs 200L on a crop: it really just boils down to what your preferred focus distance is. DOF (and therefore bokeh) is quite different with your focal length and distance to subject.

Somewhere in the vicinity of 15 to 20 metres I suppose. Never gave it much thought though.

I used to use a 200 mm lens and sometimes a 300mm lens when shooting fashion in the film days..My Nikkor AI-S 300mm f/2.8 IFED used to produce some outstanding results. With this kind of work camera to subject distance never really worried me.

Noy is about 5'4" (in the old language for those across the pond) in bare feet. Her heals aren't all that high. So yeah,, about 5'8" give and take. She's all legs so she looks taller than she actually is.

I can't remember if this image has been cropped a bit or not. I took it five years ago.
