I'm off on vacation starting tomorrow so will not be back to this thread until Tuesday. But having issues with my current host and I have been there maybe 14 years. They are skidding downhill. Can no longer email tech support, nor reply to their emails. Their tech support is skilled at cutting and pasting answers to questions you dd not ask and they killed their very useful User to User forums. SPAM is a bit rampant.

All that being said, any reasonable cost is not an object. I am looking for a reliable source with quality support and most of the Cpanel whistles and bells others offer.

Who might you recommend?

And btw, the large majority of reviews of webhosts online are from people that are paid affiliate fees if you click through their site and are not unbiased reviews. Some, for sure are. Most, likely not.

I posted photographers web hosting reviews (external link) on my website recently, click the link to read the article.

Disclaimer: the article includes affiliate links. I wrote my article then a few days later realized I could sign up for their affiliate programs. My review is unaffected by the affiliate programs, and I don't provide links to the hosts I thought were rubbish.

Use this as a start in finding unbiased reviews (no affiliate links):

Thanks! :)

If anyone is looking for other suggestions, Site5 and ASmallOrange are two hosting companies that I have a lot of respect for and one of very few hosting companies that haven't (yet?) been bought up by bigger corporations and bureaucratized. I would avoid hosting companies owned by EIG/UK2/etc.

If you aren't much of a DIY-er and want a "prebuilt" solution, I think Squarespace is getting pretty popular as a SaaS platform but I haven't had personal experience with them. I do tend to see their marketing in a lot of places; not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

I've just done some work for a customer on SquareSpace. They're ok, fairly heavily templated and not too flexible, but you can make changes if you know CSS. SEO is ok, performance is ok. One problem with SS is your content is available on two URLs which isn't great for SEO, though it's probably not the end of the world and I've figured out a workaround. I wouldn't go that way personally, I prefer the flexibility of self hosted Wordpress.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I am a DYI and looking to change hosts as mine (who I have been with for maybe 14 years) discontinued the User to User forum (very helpful and avoids bothering support), has poor SPAM filtering, no longer allows email to support and support has gone way down hill.

They do have a reasonably complete C-Panel implementation. Would like to see better backup. Uptime is good. Not stellar, but very good. They have server notice status pages they never use. I have to call.

So I am looking for a full service provider. Once moved, I then am looking to redo my site and the only templates I find I REALLY like are not for sale, but part of hosted photo sites. So that will be the next decision. And perhaps have a cusome template created for me from elements of others I like.

I did check Site5 and ASmallOrange and was not intrigued by the marketing on their sites.

I'll keep looking and following up on your suggestions.

Thanks.

Did you check the recommendations in the article I linked to? I'd use any of the ones I recommended. I have other articles on the blog about website themes too.

dreamhost, been with them for a decade or more, have tried others before and after and none come close. I have multiple sites and host some for design clients too.

Reading through your blog as I find time Tim. Only one host caught my eye so far. Still doing my homework.

Surprised more hosts do not offer C-Panel demos to see what they offer any longer. They are not all the same, especially on SPAM filters and Backup Utilities.

I'll offer up http://www.inmotionhosting.com/ (external link).
We've have had very good luck with them. We switched a few years ago after the previous host had lots of issues- customer service lacks, site infected with scripts, and so on.
They have humans available and didn't mind the odd questions we asked.
Data centers on east and west coasts, if that matters to you.

Thanks. Still reviewing nd have not made a decision. What seems most odd is how little information most hosts put out now-a-days compared to 10 years ago or so when I made my last change. I really want to know what tools they have available and most don't list. They are more interested in their 99.9% up-time (that's up to 87.6 hours a year downtime) and $2.99 a month sign up specials. Odd. I am more interested in tools and great customer service.

99.9% uptime is 8 hours downtime per year - source (external link). Web hosts are pretty generic these days, just make sure you get cpanel, ssh access is available, the only other real differentiatior is customer service. In that area Westhost SUCKS, Hostgator used to be great but lately is going downhill, Arvixie as I reviewed is good.
