Sell the 18-55, 40/2.8 and buy a Sigma 17-50/2.8 OS. It will give you 2.8 from wide environmental portraits to head and shoulders shots.

Why would you want to use 24mm for portraits when you already have 40mm and 50mm? Depends what you mean by portraits Mike. Fill the frame with a head with the 24mm, yeah I tend to agree. Put the subject in their environment as one would do with street photography, a 24 mm lens on a crop sensor camera wouldn't be too wide. Even on full frame this would work. Jurgen

I am getting a used Tamron 17-50 (non VC) at an attractive price of $150 in my country. Do you think it would serve the purpose?

It should do well. I think the Tamron is a little sharper in the corners, the Sigma a little sharper in the center so the Sigma would be better for portraits and the Tammy better at scapes, but both do all pretty well. AF on the Sigma is faster and has stabilization, but not game changers. The price difference between Sigma and Tamron is much higher in my country. I won't be able to afford a Sigma (new or used).
