Images captured early morning on June 28, 2015. The dominate male was perched with back light. I did not have a chance to setup outside so, I opened a window and snapped multiple shots over several minutes.

Composite image created July 2, 2015.

A redo is posted later in this thread July 4, 2015.

Good one, Ted. I did something similar with an upland sandpiper once; its kind of fun.

Lovely composition but I think the composite would benefit from some shadows under the birds. See the highlights on the stick? That indicates the direction of the light source, so the bird(s) should should have shadows under their tiny feet; the birds look disconnected from the perch because of no shadows. Also the bellies should have some shadows as the guy on the very far left has under his throat has. Did you dodge the bellies because they look unusually light and thus inconsistent with the rest of their bodies and the light distribution on them. I'm r a real sucker for lights and shadows :)

Thanks for the in-depth reply. The position of the 3rd hummer on the right was dead center when taken and was the exact position all were perched. As I mentioned there was a back light and a heavy one at that. That being said, one has to overexpose the subject. I agree with you about the shadows under the feet and the end result to the keen observer.

As far as your other comments about the shadows, I disagree. The birds had to be over exposed to overcome the back light therefore, little shadow will be present. No I did not dodge the bellies of the bird(s).

Thanks again.

Ted, I looked again and noticed the perch under the 3rd bird is a tiny bit darker with a minute shadow which really makes that bird look very realistic, perhaps you could repeat that shadow on the perch under the other birds and you should be fine.
I understand the slight overexposure; didn't realize it at first :) So again, just that little darkness on the perch under the other guys and you have a wonderful image :)

Thanks Renate. More constructive criticism/suggestions is needed on most every board. Once again, thanks to all.
