So far no real problems reported on the 5DS R? Am I right?

Maybe an odd question, but there is a reason for asking....

I am thinking about buying a grey one at circa £2,200 verses £3,200 it seems worth getting, and may allow me to keep my beloved 5DIII.

I am trying to find out if this is a "bombproof" camera, with fundamentally no know faults.
For example Imwould say the 5D3 is bombproof i.e. Very few problems reported. So worth risking a grey import.
IMO the 7DII and the 1DX are problematic cameras and I definitely would NEVER dare risk buying a grey, unsupported by Canon UK model.

So what is the general consensus? - Am I right it seems to be a really solid unit with no real known faults or quality issues?
Whats your view?

Please exclude stuff re limited DR and low ISO - I have already factored that in, and for me this somewhat specialised camera would work finE for what I shoot. ( i.e. Hardly do sports or bird in flight etc. )

A couple of other questions:-

1. Does it do automatic continuous AF in video ( like the dual pixel models) ?, or is it like the 5D3 where one has to constantly refocus during a video? (Albeit manually or with AF).

2. If I am in the UK, and buy a grey one that say comes from the USA, or Japan; when it comes to upgrades can I use the UK sites firmware upgrades ? Or do I Need to determine the country if origin and use those firmware upgrades.
I am assuming, maybe naively, that they are all fundamentally the same Camera; so I can just set it up as an English model and use Canon UK firmware upgrades.

I've had a few grey market 5D cameras and sent one in for some work to canon. Had zero issues with canon doing the work free of charge.

You won't have problems updating firmware. The cameras are all mostly made in the same factory. All that's different will be the plug and the cd they send out with the camera.

I wouldn't call the 1DX or the 7DII problematic. Far from it. I'd also say where you get the grey market camera from helps too. I used HDEW and have no issues dealing with them and they are great with 3 year warranty for the cameras they sell. I'd trust them 100%.

No camera is bombproof, a camera can have no faults for years then suddenly just decide to stop working, can also stop working at 1 shot.

A lot of camera problems are user error. New cameras come out and people don't learn how they work and blame focus errors or something else.

Stop worrying, get shooting

I got mine on day 1 and have used it everyday. Unfortunately I have not checked the video AF yet as I have no plans ever to use it for video - my guess is no but I can check later today hopefully.

Yesterday I was doing a bunch of things with the camera - one was taking a few pictures of BIF. I did notice that on small birds in lower contrast situations you can and do get hunting - this could be a small pixel issue versus the 1Dx but I don't have a 1Dx to compare with and I didn't bring a 5D3 with me to compare either as I wanted to when it happened - I have my 7D2 with me as well as it has an onboard flash and I'm trying to travel very light on vaca - in this manner it doesn't act differently that the 7D2.

I would highly recommend the camera - love it so far - haven't used my 5D3 since getting it if I am only picking up 1 camera it is the first choice every time. I have tested for moire and haven't found it to be an issue which for me makes the R version and the added resolution worth it.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Thanks I was thinking of getting it at HDEW as they seem pretty solid.

Thanks so much, and I would love to know if the video is continuous autofocusing. Although I dont do much video work who knows it might expand in time.
Interesting to know you have no issues with it.
I would never buy a grey model but at £3,200 in the UK against your £2,400 from say b&H Video I am sure tou can see my reluctance to pay top $!
Yeah I am not too worried on the moire front from what I have seen. And definitely wan the R version.

I think it's a bit early to tell. It just came out and it's not a high volume camera that's going to appeal to a broad spectrum of users. I think like you most users are looking at this as a specialized camera and probably use it very similarly. On the positive side though, nothing major has yet been reported though.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

just checked - no to the continuous autofocus - i have the 7d2 with me also and that does it similar to my c100 that had the upgrade

it is another reason why i think the 7D2 really is a great camera

You won't have any issues with them at all. If they don't have anything you need on their site, phone them and they will get it in for you.

Shame about the video :(
Would have helped justify the price.

Think you might be right as we havent seen a raft of early adopter reviews.
Specialised or not they do seem rather thin on the ground. Maybe the DR cynics have a point.
For me not a problem, but an interesting fact,
Maybe a lot of folks are waiting for the 5D4 ?

If it helps; I've bought lenses, bodies and teleconverters from HDEW - all registered fine on the CPS website.
