So, part of the education that I got out of all of this...maybe it will help somebody else (there's comfort in numbers<grin>;)

You aren.t alone! And your diagram notes are helpful, thanks. I must remember that in the list of causes.

Even quicker than looking at the hotfoot on the flashes - CANON-fit Yongnuo's have SILVER titling on the head while Nikon-fit have gold. There are other detail differences as well!

This ^^^ direct from the maker's own site.

Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

Yes, that is a nice, definitive image. Where is the makers' site located...got a link? I found the "Yongnuo Store" on Facebook with a discontinued(?) 15% off sale going on...the discount never appears in any of the prices and I don't see a promo code. -? Clicking on links there sends me to EACHSHOT.com. Are these two sites the place?

Thanks, Ed

Yep, it's not the most intuitive site to find.
BE AWARE that from time to time, a site called "Yongnuo Store" pops up. This is NOT the official site of the makers of the gear but simply someone latching onto the name. Not saying anything against these folks, you understand (cos I've never dealt with them), simply that they aren't directly associated with Shenzhen Yongnuo Photographic Equipment Co. Ltd who actually make all this gear. Likewise, Eachshot.com who are perfectly reputable as far as I can tell. The tangled web (haha) of Chinese websites can be a bit misleading - and the English language versions aren't always the most up-to-date.

The shop site you need, which IS the retail outlet of the Shenzhen factory, is at http://stores.ebay.co.uk/hkyongnuophotoequipment (external link)

Just to confuse us a little further, the retail outlet is in Hong Kong rather than Shenzhen - and note that it is (for this purpose) called HK Yongnuo Photo Equipment with the HK being absolutely crucial for locating the right place. Those two little letters make all the difference! Don't ask me as I dunno why (probably down to Jardine, Mathieson (external link) or Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (external link) originally, as most things were in that neck of the woods  ), it's just the way it is.

Well, I thought I'd mention that I pushed the button on a YN600EX-RT. They don't build a Nikon version of that, do they?

Not yet! I just read somewhere that they put that on hold.
Are you selling the YN-568EX? If so, how much are you asking?

Well, I looked at what the going price is for these and WOW...the price on them has plummeted after I bought mine. -? I had thought about using it to white-out backgrounds, or as a room light, etc.,...make use of it best I can. But, I'd really like to replace it with one that works with the Canon YN system. I'm not sure if we're supposed to talk selling/buying here. Sending PM...

The YN685EX C has more than a receiver - it is a Master controller.

Actually, nowhere in that list does it mention having master capability. Flash Havoc noted this pretty early on and is describing it as a slave-only unit both in the article and the comments thread:

...The YN685 do not have any transmitter functions that we know of, they have radio slave modes only.

I changed the headings to read “WITH TRANSMITTER YN-622C-TX / YN-622C” etc, if that makes more sense?

No doubt YongNuo will release a radio master and slave version of this flash some time down the track.

Guess we need to ask elv? :)

"Remote Control" is Yongnuo speak for "Master". The capabilities listed under that item are those of a Master controller. Elv is not the only source - he and I are both capable of getting it wrong. But I haven't in this case. :p

There's a confusing inconsistency in phraseology between YN's own descriptions:-

  • For the YN560 IV, they specifically state "The YN560 IV can be used as master unit, provides 3 independent groups with ............... "
  • For the YN685, they aren't anything like as specific. What they actually say is somewhat open to interpretation. Not helpful. It would appear that the unit MAY be capable of Master control, but they studiously avoid saying as much. It's a leetle bit 'Smoke & Mirrors'.
There may be some further significance that the YN560 IV is now available from their own (and other) eBay shops while there is no mention I can find yet of the YN685. Perhaps it's not finalised yet??

Added: There are detail differences between the 'YN685EXC' shown on the linked AliExpress vendor and those on the Flash Havoc site. Not finalised yet??

Confusing? Oh dear. The YN web page looks like a pre-announcement. When the manual is downloadable and is decoded, it may be clearer. I note that AliExpress quote retail pack weight and dimensions, so at least the packaging seems to be set...

Eastern European websites seem to list an USB port, but I have been unable to spot one in any of the photos. I hope they are right.
