I like what you did although you only used around a quarter of the original image. The pieces of this composite including the background and mirrored clone of the left side of the stone and waterfall onto the right side seem to to be very cleanly integrated. Impressive work. Well done!

Thank you, I like to think of images as foreground midground and back round, so yes, I used the foreground to best composite to the midground and back round added.

Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge
...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

Rules are simple:
  • Download the image file from the current week

  • Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image and post their edited version to the thread (as many entries as you like)

  • The owner of the original image will choose a winner

  • The winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link

  • The new image must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc

  • (Dropbox works well for uploading and linking these large files)

The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. For example, increased shadows sliders, reduced highlights, local sharpening, white balance adjustment, specific filters used, tone curve adjustments, etc. Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged.

Here is an image I captured at the Grounds for Sculpture museum in New Jersey a year or two ago. NOTE: When viewing the image in DropBox the colors are much darker than they are in the raw file itself. I'm guessing that is a limitation of DropBox's image viewer. The raw file should look like the image below when it is downloaded. The image below is an export from the unedited raw file.

HERE (external link) is the .cr2 file on DropBox.

It was tough to make a choice but in the end I chose RDWP's 1st version in which he eliminated the buildings other than the gazebo, replacing them with trees and greenery, and also removed the people. He still used most of the elements from my original.

Special mention to rrblint for his sepia tone washed out vignette.
I also want to mention Bianchi's 2nd image with its beautiful and seamless integration of a completely different background as well as the integration of the left side of the waterfall rocks onto the right side. I might have considered it as the winner except that only 25% of his final image was from my original image and the mirror image of the water fall rocks on the right did not look natural enough as they were obviously cloned. In any case it was all technically very impressive.

I also enjoyed all the others. In particular Stiga's first, 'Peano's, NavuDoc's, rrblint's first, NigelD's, Mozes', and Binachi's first were all very similar to various versions I created in the last year and were all mostly very similar to one another.

So now it's up to RDWP to take up the mantle for next challenge.

Mark

Mark, many thanks for providing such a good image to work on which, in turn, attracted so many posts

Thank you. Thank you all. These were all very good treatments - and a good original to work on. Next post has this week's project.

Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge

...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

This week's challenge is to see what you can make of the scene below. I have uploaded, via the link, three .cr2 captures of the same subject taken at different zooms, between 16 mm and 31 mm. Much like cropping the wide shot but the different focal lengths bring in some variations from the angel of view and keep the sharpness a bit vs a crop. Your choice which one (or more than one), of course. Kinda dark and dull so please work your magic.

Cheers - Rob

Rules are simple:

Download the image files for the current week from the link below.

Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image and post their edited version to the thread (as many entries as you like)

The winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link

The new image must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc

I removed the car because it was out of place for this image. I also wanted to remove the wire going across the water and through the trees but was concerned about negatively impacting the integrity of so many branches. PhotoLab 4 Elite.
