This one as above but cloned out the camper (sorry Martin), and cropped a bit and a 1 deg right rotation.

Never mind, that was someone else's RV! (I remember thinking at the time that it added scale.)

It may be too soon for me to compare but one action I noticed using the Polaroid app was that it only lets you remove dark or light dust/scratches and not both whereas the plugin I have allows me to de either or both.

I am impressed with how well the Polaroid app works. (I call it an app since it doesn't work as a plugin for PS :-) )

And thank you Martin for the Polaroid app pointer! In case anyone else wants it, I downloaded it from here - Ver 1.0.0.15 2002. Seems to be "clean": https://polaroid-dust-scratch-removal-software.en.softonic.com/ (external link)

Firstly, thanks to all for making the past week a bonanza , I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Now a few brief thoughts about your posts.

Bianchi(1) Amazing colour enhacement, better than my effort so far on this one
Bianchi(2) Better job than mine on this contrasty wedding shot
Bianchi(3) Superb rescue job but a tad pale
Bianchi(4) Like this a lot (Better than rrblint 's) Good saturation and contrast
Bianchi(5) Thanks for posting this wonderful scene atr Lake Wanaks
Bianchi(6) Good idea, you thought outside the box. I like it

Mozes Excellent B&W conversion but I think this scene needs colour

Navydoc Colours spot on, one of my favourites taken in 1966

NigelD(1) Better handling of extreme contrast than Peano's post
NigelD(2) Laudable effort but thing the original has too much contrast to do a good reclaim job

Peano Good to see before and after side by side., nice work on such a contrasty image

RDWP (all Seems to be a magenta cast to the rocks. Sorry, but your choice of sky kills the red rock colour :-(

Rrblint(1) Wonderful result. PL4 dis a good job on the colour of the Chelly Sandstone. Looks spot on to me. Not sure that you chose the right sky though
Rrblint(2) Excellent rendering but clarity and contrast need a boost
Rrblint(3) Yes, this image needs colour but I don't think you sky replacement is a good match - well not for me
Rrblint(4) Too pale and too blue :-(

I found it very difficult to pick a winner, partly because of emotional feeling associated with some of the photos. However I have finally chosen rrblint's rescue job on my photo taken in Monument Valley. The clean-up and colour of those butts is just right.

Over to you Mark. What's next?

Thanks for the detailed review Martin. The only reason that I was replacing the skies was the amount of dust and dirt that would have to be removed. I liked the original skies and hated to change them. If I had had that Polaroid app beforehand, I wouldn't have had to replace them. I'm still learning that app, but hopefully by next time I'll be ready to use it.

Thanks for the win and I'll get something up shortly. I suppose everyone is tired of my portraits so I'll try to find something else for next week's challenge.

And once you get the app dialed in, you'll be making a tutorial video for the rest of us, right? ;-)a

Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge
...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

Rules are simple:

  • Download the image file from the current week

  • Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image and post their edited version to the thread (as many entries as you like)

  • The owner of the original image will choose a winner

  • The winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link

  • The new image must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc

  • (Dropbox works well for uploading and linking these large files)

The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. For example, increased shadows sliders, reduced highlights, local sharpening, white balance adjustment, specific filters used, tone curve adjustments, etc. Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged.

I caught a few shots of an hawk a few days ago. Here's one of them, slightly under exposed and needs some work.

HERE'S (external link) the link to the RAW file.

SOOC:

Just a quick first attempt

ACR > suppress highlights > Photoshop > denoise, darken and blur background > replace bird

selected bird and tree to a new layer.
put a lot off gasian blur on the background, and give it smoe more exposure.
It makes the bird come lose of its background.
Finally reduced the color in the backgrand.
next the bird and tree a curve with some more contrast, and a bit higer mids.
next, some exta exposure on the back of the bird.
And give it a 5+ more color, so its pop a bit more.

And as last removed all the red, green and purple fringe...
