Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge
...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

Rules are simple:

  • Download the image file from the current week
  • Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image and post their edited version to the thread (as many entries as you wish) The owner of the original image will choose a winner
  • The winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link
  • The new image must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc (Dropbox works well for uploading and linking these large files)

The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. For example, increased shadows sliders, reduced highlights, local sharpening, white balance adjustment, specific filters used, tone curve adjustments, etc. Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged.

This image was taken at what is probably the single most commonly utilized photographic vantage point in all of the Canadian Rocky Mountains: at the top of the Sulphur Mountain gondola overlooking the town of Banff, Alberta. This shot is probably taken well over 10,000 times a year. Hundreds of thousands of versions this shot will be in existence.

How are you going to make your edit stand out from the crowd?

Ok, time to judge: All the edits are excellent. I enjoyed Benitoite's imaginative edit but it was very close between the clean edits.

I think that I like the colors in neacail's edit best. So, you're the winner Shelley. Take it away.

Nice job, Shelley! Congratulations :)

Congratulations!

Here is my edit. I really didn't know what to do with this gorgeous photo. I can see why it's such a popular spot to shoot! I didn't do much. Turned down the highlights a bit to bring out more detail in the clouds. Bumped the shadows some to bring out the foreground a bit. Also a slight tweak to clarity and profile correction. All edits done in lightroom.

Couldn't help myself as I couldn't decide if I liked a crop to a panorama effect or not. So here same settings as above, but cropped to imitate a pano shot.

I can't decide which of the two I like more. Great job with both.

Greetings everyone! Long time no see or participate.
The new format of the competition looks like a good idea. Although I did like the
old numbering system for naming files but now I'll just use the post number for reference.
It's nice to see lots of participation and people still having fun :-)

Anyhow, just playing around for a bit to get back into things,
I just copied the uploaded .jpg and messed around for bit in PS with some selective color and sharpening adjustments.
Almost added a warming filter but decided I liked the cooler edit better and then added the frame.
