I need some advice on reinstalling LR 6. I have been having multiple problems with LR 6 and 6.1 on my desktop computer. They range from pulling up the Adobe catalog web site rather then the LR Help site when I press F1, to being unable to assign keywords to multiple images, to freezing and forcing me to reboot the computer. I have no problems with the program on my laptop. I have been trying to get some advice from Lightroom Forums, but the only tip I received was to turn off the GPU, which did not help.

I have decided that I need to reinstall LR 6 and the 6.1 update. Before doing this, I have a couple of questions that I hope someone here can answer.

First, do I need to uninstall LR 6 before installing it again? I have the catalog backed up and could uninstall the program, but if I don't need to I won't bother.

Second, would I need to deactivate (sign out of) the installation on my desktop before installing it again? I would need to do this if I were uninstalling the program, but would I need to deactivate if I install over the current copy?

Thanks for any advice and help you can offer. :-)

You should export the LR catalog(s) to an external HDD so you can import them once you have reinstalled

Yes, you need to deactivate LR on your computer

Yes, you should uninstall LR6 before reinstalling to resolve any problems.
You should also remove the files and folder structure under C:\Users\[User name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom.

Then install and update LR6. If the problem is resolved you can then activate LR6 and import your catalog.

I don't know if it's really necessary to de-activate and uninstall LR before just re-installing it!

If there are seriously underlying problems, perhaps, but you could likely get away with just doing a "fresh" installation and it would "pick up" your working catalog...

When I upgraded from LR5 to LR6 I had major stability problems. I turned out I needed new Cuda drivers but I didn't figure that out until after I uninstalled and reinstalled LR, and found it wouldn't let me activate. I had to call Adobe to get the activation problems sorted out.

I'm still having activation trouble with Perfect Effects 9 but their limited support hours makes it difficult for me to contact them. Which reminds me of another issue: if you have any plug-ins installed you may have to deactivate their licenses too before uninstalling LR.
