Hey, Gang!

Recently, someone posted in the "General Photography Talk" forum sharing a fireworks shot:

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1433782

The point was raised that the "Talk" forum may not be the proper place to share photos, which is a good point, but it did raise the question: this photo was not in itself "Urban", although according to the poster it was shot about 1 1/2 miles from home...

So my thought was "How about a "General Photography Photo Sharing" forum to align with the "General Photography Talk" forum?

Actually it's "Urban Life", so it would seem like a fit to me. I suspect that "General Photography Photo Sharing" would open up a whole new can of worms for us?
Wouldn't it be easier to add "fireworks & celebrations" to "City life, industrial, street photography, distant places of wonder."?

It seems that the fireworks photographer thought Urban Life & Travel was a poor fit because the setting wasn't urban or far from his usual haunts. I joked about it in his original thread, but I agree. The picture falls between forum categories. However, this is a more literal interpretation than many members would make. Urban/Travel contains other shots that aren't really urban or travelish.

Adding "fireworks & celebrations" to the subtitle--do we need that much detail? And sooner or later someone will have a photo that's not urban, not travel, not a landscape, and not fireworks or a celebration and doesn't fit anywhere. But adding a forum for miscellany isn't ideal, either. People won't know whether they're interested in it, because it could include anything.

I had the same dilemma as to where to stick my fireworks and was wondering if another category could be added "Abstracts and everything else"? What do you think?

This is a photography forum. I wouldn't be surprised if there were photos with every single post and it wouldn't bother me if there were. Post a photo and talk about it. There are so many categories now I just get annoyed with searching for one that best fits my photo or post. I post most of my stuff in "general" because I don't wanna sit here and try to decide which one it fits in. Then I gotta worry if people will nag about it being in the wrong one. I do see the value of having categories but how many do we really need? Should we also have a "fireworks" category too? Then one for talking about it? And one for posting pics of it? Should we also have a category for talking about posts from other threads? :p

I mean, we have Pets, Birds, Wildlife, Nature under "Talk". Deciding between those 4 can be difficult sometimes. Then we have the same thing under "Photo Sharing"
Why do we need a "Talk" Section and a "Photo Sharing" section? Just combine them and post a pic or don't. And start a discussion about it or don't.

'sup y'all? :D

I do like the idea of a General Photography Sharing forum although I don't know of another instance where I would have posted there.

on reflection, i remember a discussion about abstract photography and the suggestion was that it go in Still Life, B/W & Experimental, with the experimental covering abstract work ... fwiw.

so i just checked out Urban Life and Travel, three new fireworks threads in the last 12 hours!

BUT i wonder if they saw ohlook's suggestion from my General Photography Talk thread and headed over there to post? :p Either way it doesn't matter to me, I was just happy that my shot came out. It was total guess work and the first time I had attempted such a shot. I will say that standing so close to the launch of the mortar round was a little nerve racking, I only had a few rounds left after putting on the show and this was my last one. Unfortunately it was a "bang - crackle" round and not a colorful pretty one.
