The car dealer I work for in my real job was the headline sponsor for an Arenacross event yesterday evening...with freebie tickets, it'd be a good chance to test out the 10d with my new (used) 70-200 f2.8 L lens.
It kicked off at about 7:30 (so, in other words, plenty of light). To my horror, I couldn't get AF to lock on ANYTHING. I mean not even a stationary hay bale 100 feet away. It just searched and searched much like it would with a 2x converter and too little light.
Speaking of, this same camera and lens has had very good AF results with a Canon 2x (not the II version).
I tried different settings (Program, sports mode, fully auto), all with the same results. Tried turning the 10d off, tried the "clear settings" menu option. Took the lens off and re-seated it. Alas, nothing worked. The L was the only lens I took, so I don't know if it was exclusive to that lens or not.
Shot everything in MF mode and was pretty happy with the results (see sample pic below), but know I missed some good shots due to no AF. No biggie because I was just shooting for fun. Now when college football gets here, it'll be business...and intermittently having no AF at all isn't gonna work. Anyone have any ideas?
This A.M., went out and shot some landscape shots and AF was fine with both the L and a 28-70 USM, in every mode I tried (P, Landscape and sports, just to be sure).
