Currently use a 5DMKII and have made the decision to add the new 5DR and one lens. I am torn between upgrading my workhorse 24-70 with the II ... or keeping the 24-70 and adding the Zeiss 21mm. Though my first love is landscapes I do cover events from time to time.

PRO 24-70 Mark II
The 24-70 is my go to lens. I believe the upgrade in sharpness will be noticeable when I pair the
5DR with the MK II 24-70

PRO Zeiss 21mm.
Being primarily a landscape shooter, my thinking is the marriage of the Zeiss and 5DR is near
perfect.

My other lenses are 14mm Rokinon, 100mm Macro L, 70-200 L f4, 300 L f4

Now I the we know your secret Jeff. You train them to pose and acclimate yo your presence from young pups. As they age, they just don't have any concern for you being near . Any day now I am expecting a macro of one of them. :p

Can you please comment on your battery life? For most of your still shots, I assume you aren't burst shooting very much. A bunch of us are getting only about 500 shots on full battery charge when we do not do burst shooting and with no info or image review on. Those that burst can get over 2000 shots. My camera came with the 1.04 firmware, others suspect it was the upgrade process.

Given your current lens inventory I would look at the 16-35 IS F4 it is tack sharp at the wide end and the IS will allow you to use the 5dsr at reasonable SS handheld.

I have the 5dsr and you need at least 1/250 on the 24-70 if you want tack sharp and you pixel peep. For every lens for your 5dsr I would encourage you to think about IS when you are considering lens purchases.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Thanks for the reply. The 16 - 35 is a nice lens. The Zeiss 21mm is one I've had my eye on for a couple years ... it's a monster.

I've found a local copy of the 24-70 Mk II I can borrow to help me make the decision when the new camera arrives. Everything depends on the comparative performance of the two 24-70 lenses on the new camera. The difference will have to be striking for me to get the new 24-70 vs the Zeiss.

I think the Zeiss is calling your name. There's one for sale in the classifieds. :-)

Whilst the 24-70MkII is an improvement over the MkI, it's not enough to forgo the Z21. I had the MkI, changed to the MkII and then reverted to the MkI again to fund something different. The MkI is adequate as a workhorse whilst the Z21 is spectacular in its niche.

3+ years on now ... My 5Dmkii remains my workhorse but when it gets serious and the 5DR comes out the Zeiss 21 has proven to be my favorite lens, a monster that has become much more affordable on the used market...ߑ

Thank you for the update, Paul. I'm interested in seeing some of your work w/ the Zeiss 21 and 5DSr combo, would you happen to have some to share?

You'll rarely see me shoot anything under 50mm, about as rare as me shooting a landscape, but over the years the one lens that's always caught my eye is the ZE21. Of all the samples of Zeiss glass I've viewed, it seems to have the most "Zeiss pop", and I really want to try one out someday.
