I'll be in Vegas next week, and will have an opportunity for day trips to Red Rock and the Grand Canyon (aiming for the South Rim). If possible, I'd like to talk the rest of the small group into a Fire Canyon trip.

I have a 6D with a 35 F2 IS and 50mm, but haven't yet picked up a FF general zoom or UW. I have a 60D with the 15-85 and 10-18, but want to travel light.

So, will a FF 35mm and 50mm get the job done, or should I pack the 60D and 10-18 as well (will I be kicking myself if I don't have an UW option?)

I expect the first answer to be "get a 16-35....." :)

I just got back from Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon Grand Canyon and I used a 16-35 the entire time. A 35 will not get you the wide angle needed in my opinion. I would recommend Valley of Fire over Red Rock if you do not have enough time for both. Let me know if you have any questions.

I wouldn't do it.

Maybe rent a lens? A prime would be smaller and lighter, and possibly cheaper.

I'd go with a 20mm prime or a zoom.

He has a prime doesn't he? Actually 2 if he has the 35 and 50mm

Thanks. My internal debate will now be do I take the 2nd set (60d + 10-18), or work out a full frame UW solution.
Maybe just use the 35 and stitch a few panorama's?.

My main point of hesitation is around the choice of zooms for my 6D. I think eventually a 24-70 would be more useful lens, but I do acknowledge that this specific locale would love the 16-35.

Yes it's enough. If you need wider just take multiple shots and photomerge in Photoshop. Will actually have better IQ and less distortion than a Ultra wide.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll go with the 35 and stitch where required. As I'm traveling with 3 non-photog's, I don't anticipate having a lot of time to set up and get that "perfect" shot, so I'll treat this as a scouting trip.

Good tip about Fire Canyon - I've now seen a couple of comments that it's a better visit than Red Rock. I'll try and impose my will on the group and go there (or steal the rental car at 4:00am while they're still sleeping and head out myself).

The real trick will be to avoid melting in the heat.

See Firehouse comment above as well.

Positively Valley of Fire is much better photo from a photo op standpoint but it is further. Details on the two below.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (see http://www.blm.gov …l_areas/red_rock_nca.html (external link)) is a National Park 17 miles from the LV strip.

Valley of Fire State Park is a State Park (see http://parks.nv.gov …alley-of-fire-state-park/ (external link)) and is 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas. Are you ready for a preview? Go to https://www.google.com …gAQ&sqi=2&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ (external link).

I personally used a 17-50mm and a 24-105mm about equally on my 60D. But the 24-105 was probably used at the short end more than the long end.

If you see rain clouds don't get upset, get prepared. The rocks and their colors (saturation) are just awesome while wet. Consider taking a tripod and study up on HDR photography.

I think you'll probably be ok with the 35 at the Grand Canyon at least. I went through a few of my photos from my trip there, and only a few were taken at a wider angle than 35 (full frame equivalent that is, I have a crop camera), so stitching should get you past the few times you'll wish you had a wider lens.

If you don't have time to really get into the photo thing, being with the group that is, consider taking the 60d with 15-85. That's a pretty good range and you'll be keeping things light and simple.

Thanks for the input.

Yes, the Crop with my 15-85 would be a valid choice, but I can't find it in my heart to leave the 6D at home :).

The 35 it is! (with the appropriate ND and CPL filters). If the 50mm fit's in the bag, I"ll toss it in.
I may miss having a tele option, but I'm not willing to drag my 70-300L along (unless I find room at the last minute...).
