This happened to me several months back and at that time I saw someone else having the same issues. Now it has happened yet again, only now I cannot fix the problem. I double click the EOS utility and it will not open on screen. I right click and select open and it will not open. I uninstalled and then reinstalled a new updated copy from Canon and it does the exact same thing. I even restarted the computer with no change. The only way for me to download right now is with Windows picture viewer but it only dumps the files into a single folder with the current date. At least EOS utility would dump the photos into an appropriately dated folder.

Can anyone suggest what can help, short of installing Lightroom?

might be worth right-clicking the application, and select "run as Administrator" to see if it does any different (assuming from your windows picture viewer comment that you're running a recent form of windows)

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I had a similar problem with Photoshop last week, it just stopped working.
After a day tearing my hair out and talking to adobe I just did a system restore to a time when I knew it was OK and that solved the problem, its worth a try as it could be a corrupt file not necessarily anything to do with EOS utilty

Mine has done the same thing, thought it was an issue with a previous camera but it sorted itself out but now playing up again, did a full download of EOS version 2 and still nothing

I've already tried running as administrator. No help there either. I also found that there was a file or files on my EOS M that would lock everything up. Couldn't download images from the camera, yet I put the SD card in a reader and it transferred all of them in seconds. Wish I could narrow the problem to one camera though. The issue is with a 5D2 and the EOS M.

I may just sign back up for lightroom. I like how the EOS utility works, but Lightroom always seemed to import everything just fine. They may also be ahead of the curve when it comes to any Windows 10 issues.

Canon werent much help. I uninstalled everything, reinstalled both from online and the disc and still nothing. The logo has changed despite version 2 or 3 being installed

Someone in another thread (see https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1435019) had the same issue. It was suggested they turn off their anti-virus (specifically AVG) so give that a try. It worked for the other person. If that works you might need to set up an "exception" in your AV software. Let us know what you are using and we can give you some help. If you are using AVG then drill down to my comments, again in the previous post, on how to set up an exception.

That is very interesting. I have AVG on my computer so i will give that a try.

i did download Lightroom CC though with the Amazon sale last week so it will probably be quite some time before I'll need to use the EOS Utility once again, if ever.

I noticed I had EOS Utility issues yesterday. I just used that a few weeks ago without any problem, but all the sudden, it did not work on my 7D and 5D2 for both computers.

Edit: Looks like disable AVG worked!!

Disabling an AV program is not the way to go. That step should be used as a diagnostic tool. Go to my comments in the previous thread and set up an exception.

Thanks. I did add an exception for my both computers. It works for one computer but does not work for the other. -?

There are two versions of the EOS Utility and the exception setup varies because the executable file has a different name. You may have one version on one PC and the other on another PC. From before

You may have two versions of EOS Utility on your PC. One is in C:\Program Files\Canon\EOS Utility\EU2\EOS Utility and the executable is EOS Utility.exe (version 2.0.2.30). The other version is in C:\Program Files\Canon\EOS Utility\EU2 and the executable is EOS Utility 2.exe (version 2.14.1.0.). These files are the "executable program file" that is referred to immediately above. If you have both versions, I would suggest you add both to the exception list.
