Hi,
I am using a 550EX mounted on my camera hotshoe to trigger a 420EX remotely. My question is, can i trigger my 420EX without my 550EX flash going off? Meaning I just want the 550EX to be the transmitter but not to provide any light itself.

If this is possible, how do I set it on my flashes? Thanks.

Yes you can.
Without having the manual in front of me, switch the 550 to master, push the SEL/SET button and cycle through different settings, at the same time look at the little flash icon/picture, stop when you see the output indicator turns off.
