Yes, the 200mm f/1.8, 300mm f/2.8 non IS, 400mm f/2.8 non is and 500 f/4.5L all took the old 48mm, and the newer super tele lenses take a 52mm.

What I can't remember is if you can put the 48mm into the new lenses, or the 52mm into the old lenses, or both.
I know you can swap them one way, and logic tells me it would only work 48mm into the new lenses,. but I can't recall for sure if it WON'T work the other way.

Not sure how we could shove a 52mm into a 48mm opening... Grease maybe?

Oh yummy, Darwin!!! Heheheheh... I love shooting portraitures with this glass... The image compression @ 200mm with it's high aperture yields some wonderful results...

Anyhooo... Regarding the drop-in filters for this glass... I originally thought it was a 52mm drop-in, so I purchased a new one through B&H... When I received it, I tried to slide it into the filter slot but couldn't fit it in... Upon further research, I realized that it only took 48mm drop-in filters... So I returned the 52mm drop-in CPL to B&H and searched for its 48mm version...

Through a couple weeks of searching, I found one via eBay for $100 (if I remember correctly)... There was some fine hairline scratches (just like the description said), but nothing that could warrant any issue... So that's how I was able to acquire a CPL for this glass...

:D

You can shoot it hand held,. just take rests!
It is heavy, it weighs nearly as much as the 500mm f/4.5, and the front optic is the same diameter.

That said, all the best images I ever got with it were hand held. If you want an easily pointable light weight version, get the 135mm f/2L. Not the same lens, but it's abut 88% of it's big brother for less than 1/4 the price.
