Yesterday I was sitting at my computer and my DH pointed out how adorable the dogs were being. So I quickly grabbed my Canon Snapshot A80 because my 20D was in the closet across the room (not enought time to get it). So I pulled it out and tried to take a picture, but the thing was WAY TOO SLOW! The blinking orange light distracted my dogs from being cute and they moved. Then it finally took a picture of the ceiling, because I moved.

I am so much in love with my 20D all over again. I didn't realize all it was doing for me until I tried the P&S all over again.

Yes I agree with you. I went to SIngapore a couple of weeks back and decided to take the little Ixus 500 as it was a buisness trip and I would be spending most of my time in a meeting room (with very cold air con).

It realy shows up how slow point and shoots are after a DSLR. Having had film SLRs before I knew this, but you have to experience it to drive it home.

I took out my 10D yesterday. I forgot that my 20D turns on instantly. I had to wait with the 10D. I thought to myself, it will take a brain readjustment when I take both out on a wedding shoot. My EOS 3 is snappy as well, so I may have to give my son the 10D to work with as my assistant. I may get frustrated. :(

Since getting my DSLR I have only used my P&S once and that was the same week I got my XT. I wanted to make sure I got some good shots of my daughter with Santa so I stuck with what I knew. Since then I have used my camera several times while others around me were using their P&S cameras and I always got the shot they were after because they were waiting for their camera to take the shot mine already took. I don't think I could ever go back to a P&S unless I had no other choice.

So are you saying it's the equipment and not the photographer? ;) Good equipment is a real pleasure to use isn't it?

Change the sleep time on the 10D.

Sounds like me and my P&S. I hadn't used it in six months, but I got caught short without my kit when I had to take a picture of a friend who was going off soon and whom I might not see again for a while.

Hit the shutter.. in fact, I held down the shutter button for three whole seconds, and towards the end of those seconds I was wondering if the P&S was still working after having been in storage for so long. Just as I pulled the camera away it fired, flash and all.

The other night I was helping someone cover an evening event as a second shooter (doing a favor) - the main guy was using a P&S of all things. I was thinking that if they'd sent me out there with a P&S I'd have given up - lighting was so dim I was at ISO 1600 all the way and wishing like crazy I had a f/2.8 lens on me because I really wanted to capture more ambient light in the background. I only had my 17-85 IS USM (f/4-5.6) as it was a last-minute thing. Fortunately, the 430EX helped a lot!

I really appreciate having equipment that I can trust to do its job on the condition that I do mine properly. :)

Turn off AiAF and use centerspot. TURN OFF red-eye reduction. But you still have to wait for that lens to rack out when you power up.

I went to Finland a couple of months ago and decided to travel light. So I took my nikon s3. What a mistake. Terrible in low light of which it was dark most of the time. Night scenes where horrible. The only thing that came out was 1 day shot. Live and learn... oh... and the Nikon S3 sold on ebay last week.

The series that replaced the A80 & A95 are much faster than these. I bought a A610 that smokes my A95 I had as response goes. Still no match for the DSLR but better than the previous models for sure.

I almost never use a P&S anymore. Wifey keeps one in her purse for snapshots and general purpose stuff though. In this day and age of "compact" and "convenience", I'd take "bulk" and "versatility" over that any day. ;)

My G2 is fairly slow sometimes (especially compared to the 20D). At Thanksgiving I took a picture with a relative's new Sony P&S (not sure which model), and it took me by surprise how fast the shutter went off, because I was expecting the normal delay. So I would have to agree the P&S cameras are getting much better.
