Hi everyone

I have an EF-S 15-85 that is about four years old. Yesterday whilst at an airshow I managed to unlock it from the body whilst absent mindedly turning the zoom ring to retract the lens and the lens came off and fell about three feet onto concrete mount first. I guess I must have pressed the release button by accident.

The plastic around the back element is all broken and you can see the circuit board, the back element is pitted from contact with the gravel and the zoom ring now doesn't turn more than about 1/10th of a turn (and doesn't make a very nice noise as it does so!).

I realise that the damage is very severe, but do you think it is catastrophic?

If it is likely to be beyond economical repair I will order a new one straight away as I love this lens, but if there is a chance that Canon can fix it without exceeding the cost of the lens (about £530 GBP where I live) then I shall use my 18-55 STM until its looked at.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks

Paul

If you can send it in for a low-cost or free estimate, do that. Then at least you have a real number to work with. If it can be adequately repaired for less than buying another used copy, do it.

Hello,

Please advise me if the mark on 15-85 is crucial?
The price for this lens is very attractive, but I am not sure if the mark might effect on photo's, as I am unexperienced one = noob.
Sorry if I uploaded the photo of a lens incorrectly.

Thank You in advance.

With something like this, I would be worried that over time it would migrate further than it already has.
It don't believe something like this would have any impact on a photo.
If the price is really good, I would consider taking off the front element to clean it but that always carries some risks.
If you do decide to do a little lens surgery, get the correct screwdrivers. They will save you a lot of headache.

have you given it a good scrub with a soft cloth?

that looks like a drop of something got on there and dried up.

wet the cloth first ... never spray liquid on the lens.

Sorry but that's a fungus spot. Fungus eats the lens coating and ruins the lens. It also spreads. Do not buy this lens!

@iroctd - 200€, the average on the market is 300€
@Left Handed Brisket, the spot is inside the lens.
@rrblint, probably You are right

Hmm, the only lens funk I've ever seen was stringy and black/grey. That's not to say there isn't something else that could grow in there.

Can't tell exactly what color is the spot - from white to light grey.
