A family member of mine is giving me a Tokina AT-X 28mm-85mm f/3.5-4.5. Will this work with the Nikon D700? if not is there a part i can get to make it work? also what are your thoughts on this lens? Im new to photography too so i don't know alot.

Tokina makes "generic" lenses - lenses that may be offered in Nikon, Canon, Minolta/Sony, . . . lens mounts. If yours is the Nikon mount it should go right on; if it's a Canon EF mount, you wouldn't be able to focus to infinity if you jury-rigged an adapter (I don't know of any commercial ones) since the EOS mount is closer to the focal plane than the Nikon mount is - it's like having a built-in very thin extension tube.
