I was wondering if anyone else might be experiencing this issue. I recently got a 7DII to have a second body for shoots. I used it this weekend for a wedding and for the most part it was pretty good. I did notice an issue with the meter in the VF. It does not seem to be able to show overexposed settings. If I shoot wide open at 1/40th into the sun, it shows the exposure at correct. If I start increasing the shutter speed to fast speeds, it eventually gets to 1/1000th or better before the meter starts to go to the left of the middle. When looking at the images, you can see that wide open at the slow shutter is completely blown out, and the one at 1/1000th is a lot closer to correct exposure. I am just looking to see if others have experience that issue. If not, I may just take the camera back to the shop and have them give it the once over.

is this with a half press? sometimes my meter doesn't change until I do a half press. It doesn't update the screen meter until half press maybe?

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

Ron - what exposure mode were you using? (Manual, Tv, Av, etc.)

You don't mention what mode you're using (Manual etc.) but you do mention that it takes a long time before the meter goes to "the left of the middle". Isn't the exposure meter of the 7DII vertical, to the right of the view screen, so it should go below and above the middle?
As far as I know, not being a 7DII owner, the bottom meter is for exposure compensation, flash exposure compensation and automatic bracketing range.

^^^^THIS.

The meter is on the right side, not the bottom.

Looks like you are using the exposure compensation indicator, and not the actual exposure meter, which is on the right side of the viewfinder.

- Exposure Meter is vertical on Right side (correct)
- Bottom is for Exposure Comp and also indicates Auto Bracketing Range (correct)

However
- Flash Exposure Comp appears on the Vertical Right side

Additional Info
- Auto Bracketing Range also appears on Vertical Right side (as it moves around as you adjust Exposure)

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Well that's what I get for not reading the manual. I will be reading up on the metering section again and make sure I dont misunderstand that piece. Thanks to everyone for your input. I really do appreciate it, even if I make myself look pretty dumb.

Do you perhaps have auto-ISO enabled?

I do, and it helps as I know that my exposure was getting closer when I saw the ISO start to climb. As others have pointed out, I was looking where I thought it would be, instead of reading the manual and figuring out where is actually is.
I am your typical man like that. "We don't need to stinking manuals!"
I have downloaded the manual and will be reading it later when I have some time at lunch.

Look at it this way Ron: It was an easy and cheap fix to only have to download the manual. :p

When in manual mode and using auto ISO, the meter on the bottom only displays
exposure compensation. The same is true for the meter on the top LCD screen. The line is pegged in the center regardless of the aperture or shutter speed. The meter on the right side of the VF and the rear LCD screen shows the actual exposure.
