I am thinking of getting a book done but it is for a very specific set of potential clients. the plus is big impact when it lands on their desk (if done well) but the downside is that once it is produced it can't be updated.

Not decided yet but did a small hardback cover photo book with Mixbooks and was very impressed with the quality. Not cheap ($30-40 each) but they do have fairly regular sales so I will probably wait for one of those to order (they currently have an up to 40% off deal running).

This. As soon as I had sent the images for my books I happened to shoot a few images I would have liked included. Ah well.

I personally think books make more of an impression than a website portfolio, but I've found it difficult to convince sales reps to give them a look: most people nowadays seem to just want to see websites**.

Tend to agree. A book needs to go to the ultimate decision maker rather than the person who makes the initial recommendation. You want the ultimate decision maker to be asking those below them "why aren't we working with this guy?". It's harder for the sales guys to reject someone if their boss is already keen.
