When I am out in the woods shooting wildlife with my camera, I would like to be able to hear things a little better, to make the experience more fun. I know that in the shooting (firearms) world there are amplified earmuffs that are worn that allow the gun shot itself to me quieted, but when no shots are fired, you can hear people taking in a normal tone, etc. There are some that even have the amplified part too, up to 3x's that I have seen. From what I have read about these though, the amplified sounds are somewhat lacking, as in only the mid-range sounds are heard.
So, my question is, do any of you do this, or, are you aware of something like I am referring to?
Also, I have seen in searches that there are many sets that are used by the hard of hearing and the elderly for T.V., etc. I am pretty sure that is not what I am looking for, but, if someone actually uses it and thinks it may be the way to go, I'm 'all ears'! :)

I don't have to have these, and since I am retired, that means that I am not rich, so I don't want to spend a fortune on any, if that is the case, i will just use my own ears, I guess, the un-amplified ones.

Thank you!

Randy

I've used the electronic muffs for shooting, a few different brands. As you mentioned, they are fine for hearing a range officer or having a brief conversation, but terrible for actually hearing subtle nature sounds. Also worth mentioning perhaps, is they have all been at least moderately annoying in windy conditions as the wind buffeting alternates between an amplified roar and hitting levels high enough to kick in the shut off. Would not, could not, recommend any of these for your intended application.

I have not tried any of the behind ear or in-ear devices specifically intended for what you want, but they do exist. Walkers Game Ear is a brand that has been around for a very long time and gets good reviews. If I were going to spend a few hundred dollars for such a device, that's probably where I'd start looking.

I thought that was about what it'd be, junk, but I didn't think about the wind, that is a very good point. Since you mention it, I don't think I will look for that in an earmuff type, I might give up all together.

I kind of figured that the in-ear ones would be better, but, if they cost anywhere near what you say, I'll just use my own ears. heheheh

Thank you for posting that, I really appreciate that, DAA, that was very helpful.
