My 35L lived on my 5D and now on my 6D and it has been so great for years. But 6 months ago I had a baby and I'm finding the wideness of the lens a little much for closer up/portrait shots of the kiddo. Wondering what suggestions would be for a second lens. I prefer prime but I'm open to other suggestions if they make more sense now that the subject won't be still ;)

Thank you!

Is your 50 not long enough? I love my 85 and for outdoors my 135L. I have zoom lenses but by far I am a prime shooter.

I have a 35L not a 50. I find it a bit wide for close ups and portraits.

I've been using the 50mm on FF and the combo worked great for kids. Everyone now and then i pulled out the 85 1.8 and enjoying the advantage of the lighting AF for kids' movements.

135 is too long indoors, i'd go 85 but you may want something that focuses closer to lens than the 85 can do. of course the 85/1.8 is blazing fast to focus, perfect for kids.

how about a 24-70/2.8 variety?

I have an almost 3 year old and LOVE the 135L for outdoors. Less weight than the 70-200. But for indoors? way too long unless you live in a warehouse.

At 6mo old, I'd go for the 85.

Bumping this post (does it work like that?).

I have a 35L that I bought 6-ish years ago now, but reading through the forum posts it seems no one likes this lens anymore? What happened?

I have a 50 1.4, but the AF is screwy and fixing it could be expensive.

Considering adding an 85 1.8 instead of having the 50 fixed.

Thoughts?

Have you tried to MFA your 50 1.4? I have the same lens, and when I performed MFA on my 6D the focus is spot on. :) I'm working from memory . . . The MFA on mine is high. I think it is +12 or something like that.

You can MFA the lens using the Dot Tune method, which costs nothing.

I'm sorry, I don't know what MFA is?

The AF on my 50 is gone though. Non-existent. Would MFA fix this?

No. If the autofocus is completely shot it won't fix it.

MFA is micro focus adjustment. It can fix some lenses that are front or back focusing. It is a correction that is added in the camera settings.

Since the 50 1.4 seems to be particularly prone to front and back focussing I figured that was the issue you were having.

Gotcha. Thanks for trying to help though!

It's still usable in MF but with a 14-month-old tasmanian devil running around, AF is a necessity.

So I guess the question is, for family/candid photography is it better to get the 50 fixed or add an 85?

To answer your earlier question, the 35L is still a great lens, the Sigma 35 ART kind of stole its thunder. Everyone loves that lens now.

your recent question, on a full frame you could probably get away with a 35 and a 85. the 85 focuses really fast so thats a bonus with the little ones running around. i got rid of my 50mm when I moved to FF and I dont miss it at all.
