I've wanted to buy a new compact camera for everyday carry but haven't found one yet that covers all the bases. So I've been waiting and hoping for a new model that will fit my needs. But now the need is pressing as I'm going to a week-long conference and will need to take stills and videos during the conference for a presentation on the last day.
My budget is $800 and I've narrowed my choices down to the Canon G1X M2 and Panasonic LX100 but am open to other recommendations. I'm not specifically looking for a pocket camera but rather something that will easily into a packed messenger bag. So I haven't really considered mirrorless interchangeable lens or bridge cameras because of the size and potential for damage to the lens when stuffed in a bag.
There's two negatives for the Canon: No built-in EVF, no decent remote control app for smartphones, and the dual-ring controls look like they could be fiddly in use. I would like to be able to use the camera held high with a monopod to get shots over crowds and use my phone to start recording video or shoot stills. On the plus side the Canon has a wider zoom range and would support a variety of TTL RF triggers and flashes, including the ones I already own.
I very much like the control layout of the LX100 and the built-in EVF. The remote app seems to be okay but you can't change manual settings remotely and I'm not sure about video. I don't like that the LCD is not touch capable. My big concern is that the only option for TTL RF flash is the Cactus V6 trigger and TTL flash options are very sparse. I read one post on DPreview that Nikon triggers will work in spite of a slightly different pin configuration but I'm not sure I trust that one post to make a purchase decision. Also, ironically, while the Panasonic has a smaller sensor it seems to have better low-light capabilities.
Not having used either camera yet I wonder if there's other pros and cons I'm missing or another camera altogether that I should consider? I did look at the Sony RX100 III but without a hot shoe I can't justify spending that much on an advanced P&S.
