So I have always been using a cropped body, and I now just added a 5D Mark III to my arsenal. I'm looking to consolidate and streamline my lenses, now that several of them do not work on full-frame.

What are some recommendations on what lenses I can swap out/swap in?

Here's my current gear...

Canon 7D Mark II
Canon 5D Mark III

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM
Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Canon Speedlite 430EX II

I'm sort of an all-purpose photographer. I often shoot birds and wildlife with the 100-400. The 15-85 is/was my go to general purpose lens. I just got the 24-70 with the 5DMIII and I'm looking forward to using this as my new general purpose lens, at least for the 5DMIII. I do some cooking so I have the 60mm macro for photographing food and oil and water macros on occasion. I use the 10-22 for some wide angle shots in and around NYC, shots that were just too wide for the narrow FOV of the 15-85 (Grand Central Terminal interior). The 85mm I want to use for portraits. I do some budget wedding photography for friends. This is the main reason I wanted a second body and the constant f/2.8 of the EF 24-70. Last wedding I shot was too dark(for my tastes) for the 7D Mark II and the 15-85. The 85mm f/1.8 is a little long on the 7D Mark II, I hope it's a little better on the 5D Mark III.

Also, in less than a month I'm going to San Francisco on vacation. I plan on getting some shots of the city sights, GGB, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Park, Muir Woods, etc. I'm also going to Monterey for a whale watching trip (my real reason for going).

Obviously anything that works on the 5DMIII will work on the 7DMII; so the 2 lens I am considering swapping out are the EF-S 60mm Macro and the EF-S 10-22. I'm thinking that the 15-85 will become very dusty now that I have the 24-70, but I would like to have a back-up general purpose lens.

So please, what are your thoughts and recommendations.

Thanks!

I would look to replace the 10-22. Think of this as your guiding principle, the wide work will go to the 5DIII, the long work will go to the 7DII. So focus on swapping out the wider ef-s lenses . I'm not a macro guy so I cant say if its worth replacing the 60 with a 100. But you also need to consider how much you use it, if its little used jud0st keep it and use it on tje 7DII.

Looks like you are fine. Keep the 10-22. Biggest mistake I made was swapping the 10-22 for the 17-40. The 10-22 on a crop was better. I say just be happy and keep them all.

The 7D2 with the 100-400 is ideal for action and wildlife. The question is what you are willing to carry and when.

You don't have anything for full-frame that matches the 10-22 for wide angle. So unless you plan to sell the 10-22 and replace it with a 16-35/4L or /2.8L, I would hang onto the 10-22. You can even modify the 10-22 so it works on full-frame, though it will show heavy vignetting from 10-18mm.

The 15-85 is a wonderfully versatile lens. But your 24-70 and 85 combination on the 5D3 almost has this range covered. I would be inclined to sell the 15-85 and put it towards a 70-200/2.8L IS II.

I find the 85/1.8 ideal for head&shoulders and headshots on a crop body, but a bit too short on full-frame. Assuming that you'd only use the 7D2 for action and wildlife I might also sell this to put towards a 70-200/2.8L IS II.

On the macro end I would want to use full-frame. So replace the 60 with a 100L if you still are interested in macro. Or, again, put it towards a 70-200.

I started moving to full frame about 2 years ago, with a 5Dc. Six months later I got a 6D. A few months ago I began selling off my EFs glass. It is all gone now, but I can't seem to get rid of the 60D. I like the 6D/17-40 combo better than the 60D/10-22. My mid-zoom on crop was the 15-85. The 24-105 STM on full frame is markedly better. The only other EFs lens I had was the 60 macro. I think I should have kept that one. I am definitely not buying a full frame macro lens. I get by with the 25mm Extension Tube, for the little bit of close-up stuff I do.

Heya,

How do you feel about the size and weight of the 5D3 + 24-70 II for vacation purposes?

The way I see it, the 100-400 should stay glued to that 7D2, and everything else on that 5D3.

If you swap out the 10-22 & 15-85 in favor of using your 5D3 + 24-70 II for those kinds of things, you'll notice you no longer have ultrawide, but just wide. If you want ultrawide back, on the cheap, consider a simple Samyang/Rokinon 14mm F2.8. Simple swap, works on both cameras, is very wide on the 7D2, is ultrawide on the 5D3, sharp as all get out. Or if your pockets are deep, a 11-24F4L would be ultrawide on both.

Personally, I'd rather take a light, small APS-C and the 10-22 on vacation, instead of a big full frame and very heavy and large 24-70 II. But it is just preference.

Granted, I leave my full frame at home on vacation and I use an EOS-M for my travel stuff, as I want it to be light, inexpensive, and unobtrusive to the trip.

Very best,

I like the way Malveaux thinks. My 60D is pretty much relegated to the 100-400L when the 6D isn't reaching far enough (which isn't often for me). I use my 17-40 a LOT less now that I have a Rokinon 14 and Σ15 FE. I'd love a Rok 12 FE, but that is another story. My travel/vacation camera is a G15. With that f/1.8-2.8 lens, I get results similar to my 60D/15-85 f/3.5-5.6. The two stops lower ISO is huge on the G15. The 11-24 is out of my league, financially.

This, unless you shoot a lot of UWA and you need large files.

Actually this is my second 10-22mm that I've had. I sold it to put it towards getting another lens, just to find that I needed something a little wider to get the particular shot that I needed, so I had to buy it again. I'm not sure if there is something that is equivalent to the 10-22 on FF? Chances are I'll keep the 10-22, I'll maybe I'll look into the 17-40/5DMIII combo and see how that compares.

The most likely lens to go in the EF-S 60mm macro. But not sure if I should go with the 100 or the 100 L.

As much as I love and have used my 17-40mm, I can;t help but argue for it's replacement, the new (er) 16-35mm f/4L IS.

I'd sell the 10-22, and you may never use the 15-85mm (but it's not going to sell for much)

The Macro I'm on the fence, as it will still do Macro work just fine on the 7D2. I'm not sure it's worth paying more to get a Macro that will mount on the 5D3 when the 7D2 will handle this work very well, and I'd rather see the $ go towards the IS equipped 16-35mm.

I guess it depends on if there is a strong argument to shoot macro with the 5D3. I would counter that there is a stronger argument to shoot 16mm with the 5D3 :)

FYI: These two bodies together are likely the best two body kit Canon has ever been able to field since DSLR began. I love this combo.

I just replaced my 50D with a 5DIII as well, and already have the 7DII and am making similar decisions on my lenses, I know my Sigma 10-20 won't be usable on the 5D, and I've noticed my 24/70 2.8 is vignetting at 24mm on the 5D as well, though not terribly, need to try it without the lens hood,

The stock hood should be fine on FF, unless you are seeing actual black borders, are we talking about light fall off? Vs. getting the center "sweet spot" with the crop sensor?

If you are likely to travel or go out with just the 7DII, then I would keep the 15-85. It is such a versatile lens on a crop sensor. The only reason that I sold mine was that I sold my crop body when I moved to full frame.

How much do you use the macro lens? Shooting macro on a full frame is different to crop. 1:1 on the sensor means more effective magnification (i.e. in the end image) from the crop sensor, which is something to think about. If you use the macro lens as more of a close up lens, rather than 1:1, then it might be worthwhile to swap it out for a macro lens that you can use with the 5D.

I have 100L, and really like it. I find the IS useful, especially in non-macro shooting. Otherwise, I understand that the optics are virtually identical for the 100 macro and 100L, so you could save yourself some money by going for the non-L.

Cheers, Damien

I love the 100L on a crop or FF. Worth the extra money to me for the IS.

If you want to replace the 10-20 (I wouldn't if you keep the crop) maybe the 16-35 if you can afford it, or maybe 17-40. I have used the 10-22 on my 5DIII by popping off the rubber back-piece and staying above 12mm, if I'm hard up for an UWA shot.

A 24-70 is my walk around lens on the 5DIII, and I have a 70-200 f/4L IS for the longer end. They make a nice pair. The f/4L is lighter than the MkII, and because the 5DIII has good high ISO capability, I don't know if the larger aperture is worth the extra weight.

My 2 cents ;-)a
