Finally managed to join some buddies at the river this morning to get in some RC boating action. There is a reason they are called "Fast Electric" Gave me a chance to combine two hobbies and practice capturing the action with my new-to-me Canon 7D.

I would've tried a much slower shutter speed. ISO 100, 1/500th, f/4, straighten the camera.

Also, 1 and 4 are the same.

First one is, by far, my favorite of the set.

Congrats on the 7D. Awesome body!

Diagonals make for more dynamic photos. If you compare the first one and the last one, the former is more documentary (i.e. boring) than the latter.

They look good to me. Did you get any shots in the corners? I shot some 10 years ago: Radio Controlled Boats

Thanks for the input. Perhaps as my panning skills improve I will try to slow down the shutter speed and reduce the ISO but right now I am just concentrating on learning to use the custom function settings and develop my panning skills for these kinds of shots and birds in flight.

No problem with straightening the camera but I opted for a more unusual composition.

Glad to finally own a 7D.

Thank you. I don't have any corner shots yet using the 7D but a number of them taken last summer with the T4i. I am not sure whether it's me or the camera mode I selected but it seemed a little more challenging to get a sharp image when the boat is moving towards me. Our group meets weekly so will have more opportunities to experiment as the season progresses.

AI Servo on the 7D works great for those situations.

It's all personal preference. In most cases, I disagree. Tilting the composition does not compensate for a boring image. It's the same as trying to create interest with converting to black and white or over processing. The only diagonals that work for me are like #3, where the subject is at a 3/4 angle to the camera, which is easily the best of the bunch for me. Otherwise it just looks like you, well, tilted the camera.
