Having just sat for hours as the resurrected Laptop - with a new Samsung Evo 850 SSD, ploghed through tons of updates.
I wondered is it worth waiting a few weeks and getting my new Workstation with Windows 10 and hopefully very few updates initially.?

This would mean HP went throught the pain barrier, resolved missing drivers etc. and long term my recovery DVD would have my OS on it. Thankfully HP allows one to buy the actual native Windows DVD without bloatware for £1!

Any views?

That OS restore disc (usually) comes with bloatware. The same that is preloaded the day you turn on your PC on day 1. Although you are buying a workstation, so a business class, so you *might* have less bloatware than a consumer grade PC. Sometimes HP will give you two DVDs:
1) A reformat disc back to day one of your computer with all drivers, applications and possible bloatware from the first time you turned on the PC from factory
2) Driver disc to your general workstation model. Although by the time you do get to it, the drivers may be outdated by that time and there will be updates available from their sites download page

I like to start fresh with my own Windows installs, not the ones supplied from Dell, HP, ASUS, Lenovo... etc.
You can always download your flavor of windows (7, 8, or 10) and do an absolutely fresh install of Windows with no drivers installed and go from there.

What I do is:
-Goto HP.com and click on the support tab and then goto the Drivers & Downloads page.
-Look up your specific model or use your S/N to get your machines specific driver list
-Your going to want to download all the wireless and NIC drivers just to make sure you grabbed the right one.
-Put all those drivers onto a USB stick.

Next:
-Goto Microsoft and download your version of Windows you have already installed on the workstation.
-Windows 7, go here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery (external link)
-Windows 8, go here http://windows.microsoft.com …reate-reset-refresh-media (external link)
-Windows 10, go here https://insider.windows.com/ (external link) (Still not officially released I believe)
-Create a DVD with that ISO or use Microsoft's tool to make a bootable USB stick to install from (Different from the ones with the drivers!!!)
Note: if you look on your workstation, you will see a sticker from Microsoft and it will specify Windows 7/8/10. That sticker has a license key on it. Win 7 is 25 characters, not sure if the others do as well. You can only download the ISO/DVD/USB of that version of windows. Make sure you get teh 64 bit. Your license should be located on the physical case of the PC and you just copy that info over when prompted.

Next:
-With your Windows DVD (Made from the ISO) or USB inserted
-Restart the computer, boot to DVD/USB then proceed to install windows
-After installation, load the USB with drivers from HP's site and install the wireless/NIC drivers
-ENTER YOUR LICENSE NOW FROM THAT STICKER
-Do your Windows updates (restart repeat... restart repeat...)
-Install your Anti-Malware/Anti-virus application
-Go back to that driver page from HP and download all of the necessary drivers and install
-Now would be a good time to take Tim's advice from the other thread and make an image prior to installing any applications.

Now you have a fresh PC that you controlled what applications are to be installed from the start.

Normally, workstations for small business doesn't have much bloatware. The last mobile workstation I bought (with Windows 8) didn't come with any discs. By default, the Windows setup now creates a seperate partition on your HD with a setup image. You then have the option to create a recovery DVD after you boot into Windows. I used to do my own fresh OS installs and "refreshes" every so often to get rid of any unforeseen TSAs or bloatware. With Windows 8 or 7, I don't seem to have to. I like that it has a reset function or refresh function (reset will format the disc and bring it back to a factory reset, refresh will delete current settings and "refresh" Windows).

Most my computers are Windows 7, with the exception of my Dell mobile workstation. It's got Windows 8.1, and I've been notified that it will update to Windows 10 on July 25 (Microsoft seems to be offering the update free to existing Windows users). The OEM versions may take a bit longer to get released, but it's been true for awhile that you're eligible for a free upgrade to the Windows version that's being released.

Thanks for the super detailed plan. Exactly as I would want to do it. BUT Microsoft have just told me the li k is not broken, but they have discontinued that facility. One must go back tomthe OEM provider and get a copy from them. So that comes with all the out of date Bloat ware!!!
Thats a huge loss IMO. As the only recourse is to byna retail copy of Windows 7!

Other than rebuying a retail copy of Win 7, taking the Win 10 update is my only solution. As apparrently accoundi g to their technician today.
Once you have upgraded you are able to make a true vanilla Win 10 recovery disc without the Sony bloatware from the prior OS.!
Lets hope he is right, and its not a recovery version of what you have i.e. Upgraded Sony / win 7 with all the bloatware!

Oh, I thought you were asking if you should wait to buy the HP workstation for Windows 10. I don't see a reason to upgrade to Windows 10 yet on an old computer. It takes some time to make a stable release that handles older computers well. For ordering a new computer now, generally if you get a computer with 8.1, the new OEMs are eligible for 10 within a certain periord. Don't know if it's different for Europe, but HP or Dell's site will usually say when you're ordering the computer that you're getting the current Windows (and a free upgrade when the new OS comes out).

If you have a Windows 7 or 8, you'll get a free upgrade to Windows 10. It doesn't matter where you live or where did you buy your computer. It was a Microsoft decision to offer free upgrades and no one can charge you for that.

I wouldn't buy a computer with Windows 7 or 8 at the moment. Windows 10 will be released after several days, but free upgrades are offered only within the first year.

Tim said that he has been using the Windows 10 beta version for a quite long time, and I don't remember him complaining for the OS.

Sorry I wasnt very clear.

I am asking should I wait for the new computer - but used the old one' s issues as my reason for hoping for a new operating system, where one doesnt have to sit arround for ages as it does update after update.

Well thats my feeling too - hence breathing some life into the old Laptop.

Perhaps you can borrow a disc of the same edition from a friend/colleague/IT department @ work/etc?

I've actually looked more into that: for Windows 7, you need to be SP1 and have one particular upgrade installed. For anyone with Windows 7 or 8 wanting to upgrade, the deadline is getting a reservation in by July 29th. So, you can't sit around and wait to decide. IMO, the intial releases of Windows seem to be pretty stable these days...though offering support for older equipment drivers is always the biggest issue when contemplating an OS upgrade.

Thanks I looked into that, most have gone Windows 8 or 8.1 - and nearly all regretted it. Or the others I know all have 7 Pro or Ultimate and of course my licence key is only for Hime Premium! :(

I am on 7 with Service Pack 1 , and have registered and been accepted.
BUT Sony have said they will not be supporting drivers for Windows 10, not that their fag end support is worth a light ; as they are no longer selling computers. Just winding it up!

I am hoping as I now have a Toshiba Blu Ray player, Intel CPU and Nvidia Graphics Card,, and a Samsung 850 Evo disc I will be alright as its all pretty mainstream stuff. .???

davesrose, I can't find anything that says I have to put my Win 10 reservation in by July 29th or I'm out of luck. Do you have a link for that?

I hope your auto correct kicked in.

Otherwise you need an attitude adjustment.
