Sony and RAW files...........

I had someone tell me that the Sony RAW files are not a true lossless RAW and are converted to 14 bit instead of a 16 bit file. Is this true?

yes, they are compressed, not lossless.

I'm fine with it, as the raws easily trump my previous 6D's raws, however a lot of folks that want a 36mp camera, want to use it to it's absolute fullest potential, and they have a legit gripe. There are some specific tests comparing the 36mp D810 compared to the A7r raws, and to my eyes, differences exist, but fairly negligible. Sony should give us full uncompressed raws, however, even without it, I'm ok since their raws are very good as is. The file sizes arent too bad either, about 36MB for a file.

Sony Imaging execs have discussed this and hear the complaints and are looking into providing a firmware update that will provide uncompressed RAWs. Who know when/if this will happen, but I would assume it would be applied to the a7ii, a7Rii and possibly the A7s and A7R time will tell.
