I routinely tether with a 40' USB repeater and/or 200' Cat6 cable from my 1Ds3 and 1Dx bodies to desktops and laptops, directly into Lightroom. Never have an issue. However, cheap USB repeaters (which are actually single port powered hubs) are known to be absolute junk and cause all kinds of unreliability issues.

Go for a better quality cable and you shouldn't have an issue. I also use a 90deg custom 1' cable to connect to the repeater as a breakaway (and to get the pokey cable pointing down instead of sideways into my hand). You can get these from usbfirewire.com. They also have the high powered repeater with enhanced shielding (great for noisy factory environments).

Don't spend the money for the overpriced tethertools junk...get the stuff designed for the IT world...

Look at the items on this page:
http://www.usbfirewire.com …repeaters_comparison.html (external link)

This specifically is the cable I'm using for USB: http://www.usbfirewire.com …ht.html#RR-USB2-EXT-40FTE (external link)

with one of these for the breakaway: http://www.usbfirewire.com …-72gl.html#RR-2MBL01-12GL (external link). That is a left angle cable. There are also right angle cables (as well as down and up angle!). Check the port on the side of the camera to be sure the mini-USB is oriented correctly to make the cable go down towards the baseplate of the camera.

I also added one of these to relieve the pressure off the port and keep it from getting pulled out when I'm shooting handheld: http://www.usbfirewire.com …pport.html#RR-PORTSUPPORT (external link)

Hope that helps...
