I'm sorry you dislike it. I know that the colorized B&W's aren't for everybody. I don't even like them much. But I think it helps to draw attention to the lips, it may be too dramatic I don't know.

As far as the wife liking it; She likes the re-do better. She wasn't sure about the added color and the sharp lines. So she basically had the "complaints" voiced by others here. She doesn't, however, mind the selective coloring.

Thanks for being curious.

So, in your opinion is the original better or worse? Just wondering because I personally think the original is not much of anything. Whereas at least the selective color has brought out a point of interest (maybe only to me:D ). I too, am just curious.

Thanks,
Travis

I thnk that I should ask also; is it mainly the composition that people are having problems with? Or is it the selective color? At this point I don't know if I should work on the comp or go for a better color shot?

Just trying to make this a more universally acceptable shot I guess.

I really appreciate the comments thus far. Yes, even the bad ones:o .

Maybe I'll give it another shot tonight.

Thanks,
Travis

Exactly what I was talking about. More to my taste. To me, subtle is better. But others may like the Pop Art look more. Good job on the fix.

Thanks Az2Africa. Funny part is it took less time to do that then it did the original:rolleyes: . I guess I wasted alot of unneccessary time:cry: . Oh well. I had fun doing it and I learned a little along the way.

After seeing the two together I totally agree that the first one was overdone. Thanks to everyone for pointing that out.

I like the re-do alot....very neat idea. I dont think you should consider the first go a waste of time at all, you really did learn alot from these guys in the process...you may not have gotten as much feed back and info if you had done the re-do first....I consider this whole thread a success!....Thanks for sharing!!!!!

The redo is definitely an improvement, though I think you could crop in slightly closer ...

I had to try again. This time I cropped more like Robert suggested, but I left the shadow of the nose. I also didn't add any additional color to the lips. Hopefully the lines don't look as harsh. I couldn't figure out how to fade the edge any more than lowering the brush hardness to 0%.

Let me know if this is any better. Even if you don't agree with the colorized B&W.

Thanks,
Travis

I had cropped out the nose shadow in order to improve the composition.

However, in regard to that and any negative comments that you receive, just remember that you are the final judge, and no one can take that away from you. Another way to look at it is that you cannot please everyone - in fact, Epictetus said that you should never worry about what anyone says, because you have no way of controlling what they think. OK?

I played around with this a little. On alternative to selective color is selective focus. What if you use the same mask you used for the selective color as a layer mask for a lens blur. If you do this right, you'll have lots of detail on the lips and the rest of the face will blur gradually. This would just accentuate what's already there and I think it could be a very natural looking way to save the image. Oh, and go for the red lips, just don't desaturate the rest.

That's my idea anyway.

If not now, when?
