If you have a trip planned to another country and your camera has a replaceable time/date battery, consider taking a spare with you.

We just returned from a seven day trip to Akumal, Mexico. On our first day the date/time battery on my SX160 shot craps. Every time I turned the camera on it wanted me to set the date and time. That screen is easily dismissed but it became an aggravation after a while. The battery is a CR1220 and I couldn’t find a replacement in that area of Mexico. Perhaps I didn’t look hard enough but I didn’t want to waste a whole day looking for a battery. My favorite shot from the trip was of a tricolored heron with his catch of a sergeant major fish.

. . . or maybe just change the thing before any major trip that's over a year since the previous battery change.

You're right, that's an even better idea. Yet the date/time battery in my SX110 IS is still going strong after many more years of service than the SX160 IS. It's the same type of battery too.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you're carrying around a spare JIC, it may need replacing by the time you use it, if you haven't lost it.

The CR1220 battery is pretty common since many car key fobs use it. Most decent size pharmacies and even grocery stores have them and you likely could have obtained one at a car dealer parts department.

Your SX110 IS also uses that battery so pick one up and carry it for the next time you need it. The last time I purchased them, at Target, they came in a 2-pack for $6. They have an unused shelf life of several years.
