Seems like a little bit of a step up from the 40d in terms of performance, maybe not ergonomics or build quality. I don't think it stacks up too well with the latest and greatest from Canon or Nikon though. It's also worth considering the whole system, are there a lot of good bang-for-buck lenses available for Pentax?

Heya,

What is drawing you to Pentax in general? That would help figure what body to look at.

I would be looking at:

K5
K5-II
K5-IIs
K3

For the costs, I don't see a reason to save a few dollars to get the lesser options. The K5-IIs seems to me to be the best overall deal for cost in terms of features and quality.

K50 to K5IIs is like $100~150 difference.

From there, it's a question of what lens(es) you want for what you plan to do. If extreme reach is your game, I wouldn't really focus on Pentax. If general shooting from wide to general telephoto as far as 300mm is what you're after, with weather resistance and durability, then Pentax is a good way to go.

K5-IIs + 18-55 WR & 55-300 WR HD seems like a great entry to doing everything in the rain and snow type setup.

I'd love to have the K5IIs & 16-85 HD DA for general and landscape, which is my overall want for Pentax (so I can do it in the rain and salt spray more easily). From there, I just really want the 300 F4 DA*. A fast telephoto prime for birding from a kayak/boat.

Very best,

;-)aHi Martin
Well you know we have some nice Canon gear,,but the Pentax line has taken my interest also?? i have both the 40D & 50D and prefer the 50D over the 40D ,both are in mint shape and low shutter clicks,,
wife likes her SL1 and 4 STM lens,( i do to) when she lets me use them???
Got to keep budget low so must keep that in mind??what i am seeing the K50 2 lens combo is in my range after i sell off some Not used Canon stuff
B&H has the K50 and 18-55 WR & 55-300 WR for $596,,in my book thats a steal ??
Features i am looking at are.
Price
Weather sealing camera & lens
Great reviews by owners
Pentax older lens compat.able
& the very nice Pentax pics i been seeing.
And Canons lack of Keeping UP and relieing on OLD tricks,& Canon Prices ??
I know there are more things, but them are some,i am sure you may know many more??-?
This is why i am asking the ??s before i jump into another system ?? :p
Allways open to ideas??
Thanks Ron

Heya,

Realistically, I think Pentax's main appeal at this point is the weather resistance and durability at the price point.

Otherwise, it's hard not to look at Sony/Nikon if you're really into the latest stuff that Canon isn't keeping up with. Canon's strong point is the Lens line up and the AF systems. If you're not in need of really good long telephotos and don't need the AF systems they have to offer, then any other system has other features worth looking into.

For me, it's the weather resistance that has my interest in Pentax, along with the option to have a body with no AA filter on top of that, and it being affordable. For me, the K5-IIs with the 18-55 WR or the 16-85 WR would be that setup. Would love to weather shoot and landscape shoot with that setup and fear no snow, rain or dust.

Very best,

I went from a 50D to a K5. The 50D focused better in low light (the K5II and K3 have fixed this problem). In all other ways, the K5 is about two steps ahead in my opinion.

I say skip the K-50, spend 100-150 more for a used K-5II that will match the ergonomics and build quality of your 40D.

If you don't mind manual focus, there are quiet a number of quality MF lenses in K Mount that still work on Pentax DSLRs. There are some good wide to short telephoto AF lenses that can sometimes be had for bargains. In the long telephoto range the choices become fewer, which is why I bit the bullet and bought a DA* 300 F4.

Overall Ricoh seems dedicated to Pentax, and I think you will see the lens and camera lines expand.
