hello
I have never owned a 24-70 but think it may be a good combination with 17-40, as I only use at tripod and for landscape photography. I use two 6D as cameras.

What kind of photography do you use most of your 24-70 to. I feel that such optics can replace much. 24mm for the landscape. 35mm for the street. 50-70mm for portraits. What do you think?

I am usually most outdoors and shoot animals but has increasingly slipped into landscape photography and now want to get into a bit of street photography. I like zooms.

What do you think of the focal length 24-70? I have to acknowledge to myself that I am in need of it. I sold my 70-200 / 4L yesterday, used unfortunately only 1-2 times a year.

This is what my set today:
17-40mm - 50mm - 90mm macro - 150-600mm.

Canon running a good campaign on 24-70 now, 200 USD I get back If I can decide before the end of this month.

Heya,

I shoot mostly primes, but now and then I move to a zoom. Depends on what I'm doing. I use a zoom when I know that my distance to subject will change quickly or when I have no clue what I'm getting into and don't want to change lenses often due to constant change. That's where the zoom is super handy. I also tend to use a zoom when I'm shooting with lighting, because I'm less concerned with aperture there and commonly shoot at F2.8 with lighting setups outdoors anyways, so again, convenience of focal length changes is nice for fast changing and not having to have down time to swap a lens. For landscape, I use zooms, not primes. Frankly a zoom stopped down to F8 is as good as a prime stopped down to F8 for most practical purposes, so I tend to use something again more convenient when I can especially when using filters, so I'm not having to undo-restack-etc, the whole setup, just to change a focal length.

Based on what you're shooting, you don't need an F2.8 lens though. You have options. I would look at:

Canon 24-105 F4L IS
Canon 24-70 F4L IS
Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC

Very best,

$200??? Are you sure that's not a stolen item?;-)a The cheapest I'm seeing for authorized dealer price is Canon Price Watch's street price ($1650). I paid around $2000 when I bought mine.

The lens itself does have great optical quality for a zoom lens. Before it, I had a Tamron. Tamron lenses are good optically and offer good sharpness and value. But once I did side by side comparisons with a borrowed 24-70 2.8L, I just had to own one. What I like about it is the contrast and color balance: I saw there was better contrast and color variations in shadows when comparing with my Tamron.

Yeah, the 24-105 feels so old and I want something small when I already got some big lenses in my bag. I thought of Tamron at first but it's heavy and then it's no campaign in their 24-70 as Canon. So Canon is my first option cause it is smaller in size and weight as well as close-up function that may come to replace my Tamron VC 90 that I own because I shoot not so much macro anymore.

That's pretty good for the amount back:) Canon's rebates for the 24-70 in the US is $50 debit card: I've been using the debit cards for grocery shopping. But the retail price of the lens also seems to have gone down in price recently. Good time to go ahead and buy :)

I have a 24-70 and a 24-105, and honestly the 24-105 spends much more time on the 5D3 than the 24-70; the difference in image quality is not a concern. If you have a good sturdy tripod it may not be a problem, but I shoot handheld a lot and the IS is worth more to me than that extra stop of aperture. I also use the long end of the lens frequently.

OTOH, the 24-70 seems to focus just a bit faster in low light, so when shooting sports in dark arenas it comes out from time to time.

I'm in the same boat....originally bought the 6D kit with the 24-105 with the intention of selling the lens, but I decided to try it out first and found it to be way too useful overall. Unless I want or need the 2.8 aperture, I usually opt for the 24-105 over the 24-70.

I came to the 6D from a 7D and the 24-70 on the 7D is a longer lens...when I mounted it to my 6D, I found myself missing the reach on the long end, which is why the 24-105 is so appealing too. Plus my long lens is a 70-200/2.8, which gets pretty heavy to carry around. If you're not keen on using a tripod most of the time, the IS is very handy to have.

You say that the 24-70 focuses a little bit faster in low light :) good combination with 6D then that is one of the best cameras to focus in low light (with centre focus point though).
Here in Sweden the 24-105 in white box costs 875 USD comparing to the new 24-70/4 in original box which costs 950 USD.

When I go out shooting landscapes my lens setup is 14-24, 24-70, 70-200. I use the 24-70 focal range a lot, probably equal to about 70% of my shots with the 14-24.

I think that will be my solution too in the end. When I use the 17-40 it's only up to 20mm and always on tripod. I think the 24-70 focal length can open some doors for me. Some new photography areas, like street photography and all day shooting. It helps also that I own two cameras (same model too).

I Often use a 24-70 with full-frame.

I'm finding I use my 24-70 f/2.8 II more so than my 16-35 f/2.8 II for landscape photography.

The link below shows an image taken at 70mm on a full frame body. It's a sharp fast lens and a joy to use.

It looks great :) but I'm curious about my choice between 24-70/4L IS USM or 24-70/2.8 VC. I think I'll like the macro function in Canon, maybe it even will replace my Tamron 90 VC which I don't use so much.

I hate to sound negative but I have had friends experience issues with the Tamron. One fellow photographer (who is careful with his gear) had three copies in a row develop defective AF; one occurrence was when we were both shooting an award ceremony. If you buy one, be sure you have a warranty or a good return policy.

I've also heard negative things/issuses with the af in the Tamron. If I buy a 24-70 lens it will be the Canon.
