KFC's parent company, Yum! Brands, has created a concept restaurant that hopes to knock Chick-fil-A down a peg or two. "The Last True Chicken Sandwich" is the moniker of the one plus year old Super Chix chain. I visited their second of two stores today for a bite of lunch.

It is clear Super Chix is going after what made Chick-fil-A a tremendous success, they are also adding a bit of their own creativity to make a pretty solid chicken sandwich. While I am a fan of the Chick-fil-A sandwich, it is nice to see someone trying to improve on it.

This is the deluxe which includes lettuce and tomato and optional haystack onions and jalapenos (at no extra costs). If you are in the DFW area it might be worth checking out.

Looks like they're going after Raising Cane's more than CFA.

Cannabilizing their KFC brand. This also flies in the face of their 2011 decision to divest themselves of their Long John Silver's and A&W brands. Those two chains no longer fit in the company's long-term growth plans of getting rid of the small players to focus on foreign expansion of their large core brands, Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut.

They're dabblling in Vietnamese food too ( the bánh mì chain), a PR nightmare. Look for them to unload this newest plaything down the road for a quick profit.

I hear what you're saying Texkam ...

I like what Raising Cane's is doing, nice concept and it works ... though, I don't like their sauce and I am probably the only one :(

I worked for KFC, as a young teen some 35 years ago ... and before Pepsico got a hold of them. I recall being quite upset when Colonel Sanders passed on around the same time. It was a good company back then, making a good product. Time takes a toll on everything it seems. Whenever there is a success it seems the first thing the investors do is find a way to cheapen the operating costs which in turn cheapens the product and at some point it is about volume instead of quality.

Anyways, and I am weird this way, I really love the look of a nice chicken sandwich. It has a certain beauty to me ;) so I decided to photograph theirs. They kind of smashed it together and I think the bun could have looked much nicer .... maybe I will just make my own chicken sandwich from scratch and photograph it! After all, I might just still remember most of the Colonel's secret herbs and spices.

I grew up in Louisville. My wife was with KFC corporate (YUM! Brands) for 16 years. She's got some good Colonel Sanders stories. Pepsico learned they weren't cut out to run restaurants. That's why they spun them off.

Here's me and my family hangin' with Colonel Sanders in Shelbyville.

Yeah, pretty much. He was an icon and releshed that role.

Here's a favorite Colonel Sanders story:

The Colonel, ever the grandstander, was known to unexpectedly show up at random KFCs and wreak havoc. One of his favorite "stunts" would be to walk back to the kitchen where he would taste the gravy, declare it not fit for consumption, and pour it out on the ground in back of the building. He would then proceed to school everyone present on how to properly make a great pot of gravy. As stores passed the word about this regular antic, they decided one day to head off the Colonel as he made his rounds from store to store. So one day, right after the Colonel left one store, employees packed up his very pot of freshly made gravy and drive it over to a store he was expected to hit next. Sure enough, the Colonel showed up, proceeded to walk back to the kitchen where he tasted the very gravy he had just made moments earlier. Yep, you guessed it. He declared it unfit for consumption, dumped it out back and schooled all present on how to make gravy.

Chick-fil-A Killer ... Maybe

BLASPHEMY!

 I love Chick-fil-A sandwiches, and waffle fries, and lemonade, I'm sure I'd be thirty pounds heavier if the closest one wasn't over an hours drive away.

That said I am quite partial to the Colonels offerings also.

Great family pic with the man, nice story too.

P.S. The blasphemy bit wasn't meant as a jab about the owners beliefs, I really do enjoy their chicken that much. An example would be the last time I went, I ordered twenty two sandwiches, a waffle fry, and a lemonade to go. The girl thought I was joking until I told her my story to which her response was I should call ahead next time so they would have the order ready for me when I got there and not have to waste my time and wait. Two sandwiches with the fries and drink were for while I waited, twelve for lunch at work everyday(two a day, six day weeks), and the remaining eight were for some of my coworkers I was pals with who didn't know any better.

Whoa. That's the real Colonel? The guy they have on the commercials now looks pretty similar, if I'm remember correctly.

For me, in order to go after Chik-Fil-A, they have to attack the waffle fries and Polynesian and honey mustard sauces.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

Nice shot and nice looking sandwich, Lupo-Lobo. I'd love to try one...

@texkam, really enjoyed your Col. Sanders anecdote, always like hearing the unwritten history :)
