Hey everyone, the new version of Windows has already been rolled out and I'm still waiting for the notification to upgrade. According to some sites, it might take a few days or even weeks before you get the notification to upgrade. However, I read here that you can skip the line and download directly from Microsoft:

http://www.cnet.com …get-windows-10-right-now/ (external link)

I've been reading good reviews of Windows 10. Has anyone here made the upgrade already and can share thoughts on it? I know I should wait a bit before upgrading... but it's just so tempting to upgrade right away hehe

If you want to get it now, go to Command Prompt (Admin) and type:

wuauclt.exe /updatenow

then Enter. Wait a minute or so then go to Windows Update and you'll see that you are good to go.

The updates are also going effortlessly for some and horrible for others. My desktop took a couple of tries and I still have not achieved a successful install after completing the download for my Surface Pro 2 many times. I recommend before attempting the update:

1. Update all of your software and drivers (including using Windows Update) first
2. Delete any cr@ppy software you no longer use
3. Clean up your apps (Win 8) by getting rid of everything you tried out but don't use
4. Unplug any old USB devices (I have a couple of ancient scanners that I use with VueScan)

In other words, try to get rid of any borderline software, devices or drivers that could cause the upgrade to fail.

I'm all set up on my desktop now and loving it. Way better than Win 8.1, even with a start button replacement app like StartIsBack+. Finally an OS that I like (so far) more than Win 7 (or Win 8 with StartIsBack+ which IMO is even better than Win 7).

Same here. I think I got the notification last week that I could switch to Windows 10

A related question. I have just put an SSD in my desktop but have not put anything on it yet. My intention is to put a clean install of Win 10 on it and then install my other software on the SSD while leaving my current C drive as is until the SSD is complete and working correctly. Will that work with this upgrade version?

Installed it on my Surface Pro 3 and its been good so far. Took about an hour to update from start to finish including some smaller updates. Battery life has been really good. Played with it for 3 hours updating tons of apps, programs, and just playing around and I'm still at 60%. It's a great update for laptops, desktops, laptop/tablet hybirds and tablets only.
I will most likely make a video in a few days.

I have been using Win 10 since the Insider program started. Today I started updating my main PC and laptop. On my main Desktop I updated from 8.1 Pro, as soon as the update was finished I secure erased my SSD and did a clean install(if you want to do a clean install on Win 10 you will either have to do the update first or buy a keycode). The Desktop went fairly smooth, no major hiccups. The laptop on the other hand did not go smoothly at all. I was updating from 8.1 to 10, the update froze after the first restart and I had to do a forced shutdown. On restart it tried to restore back to 8.1, which froze early in the process, had to force restart again. On this restart the BIOS failed to see my SSD, somewhere along the line the boot manager on the SSD was erased. Had to do a clean install of 8.1 to get the laptop running again. It's currently trying the update to 10 for the second time.

Second attempt on the laptop froze just after first restart, this time it was successful restoring back to 8.1, tried finding a solution online but just found a lot of others with similar problems.

I just think too many people are on it so download speeds might be slow of files could of corrupted during the download. I went into starbucks and saw a few people updating.

Download speeds have not been an issue for me, seems a lot of people(including me) are having an issue between the update and Nvidia GeForce drivers.

No you can't perform a clean install right away leaving your old installation intact:

Can I perform a clean install using the Free upgrade?

No, it will require that you are running a previous qualifying version and start the upgrade from within the qualifying version. You can initiate a clean install after completing the Upgrade.

Please be aware that you cannot use the free upgrade offer to perform a clean install on first attempt. You must first upgrade from the qualifying version of Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 (whether you do it through Windows Update or using the .ISO file). Ensure the upgrade is completed successfully and then ensure that it is activated. You can then proceed to do a clean install by using recovery media or using the Reset function in Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC (Get Started).

what you can do, provided you have the software for it....is to make a clone/image of your current installation as a backup in case things get really ugly. (backup is always smart ;-)a)

Thanks. So it sounds like I should clone the current c drive to the SSD and then upgrade that followed by a clean install.

I just got this new laptop last week so I don't have much stuff installed on it yet. Maybe now is the best time to upgrade while I don't have a lot loaded on it yet. I'll try it out over the weekend. Thanks for the input guys!

I got a notice that the upgraded is downloaded and ready for the upgrade but I think I'm holding off for a few weeks and let the first adopters work out the bugs. My machine is just so stable right now, I hate to do anything to destabilize it.

Tried it on my laptop for a few months, it's better than win 8 in my opinion, but my main machine will remain Win 7 for now.
