What lenses should I take with me for travelling?
I have canon 70-200 f4 IS, 40 f2.8, 85 1.8 and 135 f2

Should I consider to buy canon 17-40 or sigma 35 Art? Or should I buy other wide angle lens?

Thanks for any advice suggestions in advance :)

FL is less about covering the widest ranges possible and more about finding the FL you enjoy shooting.
While there is a 'best lens' for many situations there is no need in bringing something that will be unused.

If I were you, based on your lenses go for the 40mm stm and your 70-200mm f4IS
This give you a good 'normal' and lightweight lens and still have the 'big gun' for reach.

Travel where? Purpose of the travel (photography purpose or is this a vacation)? What are you wanting to even photograph on this travel?

This is a personal thing and really depends on you. You could be traveling to a city with tightly crammed little streets full of dark dingy churches with a group. Or you could be going on a cruise and whale watching. We have no idea. And different lenses would be useful depending on what you wanted to actually photograph.

Knowing nothing, there's no way to really suggest anything useful to you.

But that said, personally, I would suggest you figure out if this is travel for the purpose of photography, or travel for the purpose of vacation with others, etc. That kind of thing. And figure out if you really want a heavy bag of lenses and a big camera and do nothing but that on whatever trip you're going on, versus taking a small, light, simple setup to enjoy your travel with photography being a happen stance thing instead of the primary activity. That's your call. Personally I'd want the light & simple setup so that big gear and a big bag doesn't dominate the day. But I equate travel to vacation, not a photographic shoot. For me, I'd be happy with a little mirrorless and a wide lens (EOS-M + 22f2).

If I were going traveling and wanted to spend a lot of time photographing, for me, I'd want wider angles and maybe one telephoto, tops, to keep it simple while still having a good kit.

Personally I wouldn't want a 70-200 and 135 prime on a travel trip. I'd want a wider angle zoom with a good useful range. Again keeping it simple. A 17-40 (or 16-35) or 24-105 and 70-200 would cover almost everything short of a birding expedition or other extreme wildlife thing. But I'd still want the simplest kit even doing that and would probably do the 24-105 with a light fast prime in the bag and a travel size tripod).

Very best,

Similar to MalVeaux's comments, it really depends on where you are traveling and what you intend to photograph. My travel kit changes depending on the destination. For a long weekend trip to Mackinac Island in northern Michigan, I took a 5D3, 16-35L f/4 IS, 70-200 f/4 IS and my EOS M kit. When we travel to Yellowstone National Park later this year, I will be focusing on both landscapes and wildlife, so will take my 5D3, 7D2, 16-35L, 24-105L, 100-400L II, 1.4x extender, and EOS M kit. For a weekend visit to see family in northern Michigan, I may just take my 5D3 and 50L.

My formula is one long zoom (I also have the 70-200 f4 IS and love it) and one wide zoom. Along with that I may add something to suit a special opportunity on a given trip, like my 400mm if I will be shooting an eclipse or birds.

Lots of people like the 24-105 on full frame. I like a wide zoom and a fast prime. Is your question about full frame or crop? On my recent trip to London, I took the 35F2 IS and the 17-40. If going to a place like Rome, I would want an ultrawide.

For me traveling for vacation means photography. And of course it depends on where it is.

Paris - 6D with 24-105. Until I got a FF camera, it was 70D with 15-85.
White Mountains in NH - 6D + 24-105 +70-200 (I can take everything I have, it will be in a car anyway).
Birding and/or wildlife - 70D with 100-400 II. On a BlackRapid sling I can carry that for hours.

The OP may want to tell us what he/she wants to shoot.

Obviously, you have an excellent set of reasonably priced lenses. All of which are popular choices.

That being said, I have to believe you have or will encounter in your various travels the need for a wide angle lens which (and I assume you are the owner of a full frame camera) is a lens you are currently lacking.

If you want to stick to the Canon line (and I am not saying you should) you still have lots of excellent choices.

On the less expensive side, the 17-40 is a great choice. Buy it used. I sold mine after years of good use.

The relatively new 16-35 f/4 IS is better. I have rented it and hope to buy it some day.

If 24mm is wide enough for you, then pick up a 24-105 f/4 IS for about $500-$600 used.

For about the same money (because it's hard to find this next one used), consider the 24 f/2.8 IS.

But there are plenty of non-Canon lenses that are excellent wide angle. I just have not personally tried them.

I was looking at travel lenses this morning, I know, horrible gear issues I have, I found that the tamron 28-300 is pretty damn decent when stopped down a tick or two, and nearly comparable to canon's 28-300L

http://www.the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=8&APIComp=3 (external link)

how is this even possible?

damn gear syndrome flaring up......

combine with a 35mm F2 yongnuo and EF 100F2 and you've got a hell of a travel kit on budget.

the 24-105 is always a solid bet as well, but having 28-300 on tap must be pretty nice.

Sounds like you already want a new lens... Looking for an excuse to buy one? ;)

My fav travel setup is SL1 + 24mm 2.8 Pancake And canon 10-18 stm. I like to keep it light so i can concentrate on being IN the moment rather than watching it. I tried bringing the 70D and 70-200 2.8 but its too heavy and was too long for the scenery I wanted to capture in Colorado. If you are going for wildlife, then yea, bring your longest lens.

I travel with a 500mm f/4L IS and t-Cons,
100-400mm L IS MkII
17-40mm f/4L
Usually bring the 135mm f/2L and sometimes a 24-70 VC and or 70-200mm VC

..and always bring a stack of pancakes.

Not sure how this helps, but ... since your question seems to indicate that suggestions for new lenses was on the table.

Pending some further guidance as to what type of travel you are doing, some thoughts . . .

I like travelling light. If there won't be much time for photography (e.g business travel or city weekend), I take 6D plus standard zoom (24-70) or one wide(ish) prime (35 or 50).

For a weekend away with the family (mainly urban) recently, I took 6D plus 24-70 and 135L. This combo worked well.

For a longer trip with some bushwalking as well as general travel, with a car, I took 6D plus 24-70, 70-200, 14 and 35, flash and tripod, filters, remote (etc.).

Different horses for different courses.

Cheers, Damien

when i travel in aus i take 3 lenses - a wide one of either the 10 - 22 or 16-35; a medium either 24-105 or 18 - 200 ;and a long either 70 - 200 or 100 -400 depending on wher i am going and what i expect to see and the 1.4 ext and 1 camera plus a point and shoot

when i travel OS i talk the 24-105 and the 100 - 400 and the 1.4 extender and two dslr cameras - but as jake says and if i had a 500 (dream on ) i would certainly take that also

so re your kit i would take the 40 plus the 85 and the 70 - 200

dont know what sort of travel you planning but good luck
cheers rob

Do you still have the lenses listed in your profile? If you do and we know your travel and interests it might substantially change our recommendation.
