What about the 18-135 STM for walk about and a 28mm 1.8 for lower light indoor shooting? The 28 can also be a low profile walk about lens if circumstances require.

28 1.8 is good
but I'd rather put a pancake in a pocket.

I'm not sure that 24mm will be wide enough for those destinations. Instead of the 24mm pancake, consider picking up the EF-S 10-18mm IS. It should work great for interiors with the image stabilization. Then also pack your 50mm f/1.8 for more reach, portraits and low light. That would be a pretty compact kit.

Great idea. However I want to be moving to a FF camera soon, and not sure spending $400 CAD on a EF-S lens is something I want to do right now. Maybe I could look into renting one for the three weeks there.

For 95%+ of what you're going to want to shoot the 18-135 STM will be faster and sharper than the 50 f/1.8. The narrow depth of field of f/1.8 will be too shallow in a lot of cases. Additionally, for non-moving subjects, i.e. most vacation pictures, you get 4 stops of IS out of that lens. That rates the f/5.6 end of the lens as an effective f/1.4, that's faster than the 1.8 at the long end. At the short end, you're about 2 stops faster. And in both cases, you aren't limited to an overly thin depth of field.

I didn't realize how much IS helps me. Thanks.

If limiting weight and space is the primary (or major) consideration, then give some serious thought to leaving the DSLR at home and taking a capable compact, like an RX100.

My brother in law does have a Canon S120. My initial plan was to borrow it, but the wifey really wanted to bring our own gear and not ask him. I'll bring up the subject again.

vengence wrote in post #17656930 (external link)
This is a really good suggestion. I'm not sure you'd be happy in Europe with the focal length of an RX100, but it should make you consider what you're really giving up.

The Canon S120 starts at 24mm. Is that the 35mm equivalent? In any case yes, this may not be wide enough.

Lbsimon wrote in post #17656944 (external link)
I have been several times to all the places you want to visit, except Lyon. 24 mm is not nearly not wide for the places you want to see. You will not be able to frame places like the Colosseum in Rome, or Notre Dame in Paris,or the view of the Grand Canal from the Realto Bridge in Venice. You will need at least 18 mm wide. Taking the 10-18 as the only lens will be really limited, so I would strongly suggest the 18-135.

However, since you do not want to check in the luggage, you may seriously give a thought of leaving the SLR at home. It takes a lot of space in your backpack. Maybe a compact camera or a mirrorless one would be a better fit for your type of travel.

Great information. Thanks!

Your question is the Canon S120 24mm a 35mm equivalent? Yes, that is the 35mm equivalent (120mm at the long end).

I was determined to get a convenient zoom for my recent travels. I decided on the 24-105. Went to buy one and come home with the Sony A6000 and kit lens. Same price and I never did regret the decision. Kept my full kit usually not to far away for night, portraits and scenery.

I carried a 5D3 with 2 zoom lens to China. It was way too heavy and cumbersome. When I got back to the USA I picked up an SL1 for my travel needs.

My wife has the S110, and it is much like the S120. The field of view at the wide end is equivalent to 24 mm on full frame, and not longer.

S100 series
I do not see canon continuing to make these size cameras much longer.

I may be able to borrow an SL1 from my wife's cousin, but that is a long shot. He may also have a 18-55 STM, which may also help with the weight and space.

Thanks. Considering this, this is better than my 18-135 on crop (18*1.6=28.8mm).

Yes it will fit in baggy pockets. I got a small pouch that will also fit my wallet and phone in for when I am wearing board shorts or jeans.

I have spent the past week in Italy and now I am in France.
I brought my 6D my 24L and my 50L. Europe is even more narrow than I imagined.
Well I don't enjoy distortion in my photos I often don't have the ability to back up more to frame the whole shot.
I regret not getting the new 16-35L f4 IS before coming but the fast prime is very useful.
I also brought my G7x as a backup of for a light travel days from a hotel. It's got spirit!

I have been preaching this for years - one needs a very wide lens in old Europe. While you can fit (not without difficulties) the Notre Dame in Paris in the frame with 24mm, you need something wider for Roman Colosseum or Florence Duomo.

Once I was told that there are plenty of these pictures on the Internet, but the difference between them and mine are that those are MINE! :-)
