Pick anything from 35mm to 135mm and you can pretty much predict the responses here. It's a super broad topic and comes down to a personal preference.

When I 2nd shoot weddings, the 135L is my go to prime for portraits. I wish that I could justify the 85L 1.2 but it would not get used very often at all.

50L portraits
35A/L for almost everything else

85L and 135L are awesome, but I prefer to be closer to my subjects. I can always crop with the mark3 files, they are so clean.

I have done some low budget weddings and wedding portraits but I only used what I had in the bag. This upcoming wedding is a bit more classier and better paying. I would like to give the bride and groom the best possible image.

I don't own a prime lens so I am going to rent one for the portrait. I have not a clue which lens to rent. Can someone explain what a ART lens is?

ART lenses are a line made by Sigma.

I will be photographing the bridal portrait and the formals at the wedding of the wedding parties. I want as sharp as possible for both should I look at one prime for the bridal portrait and a different prime for the formals?

This depends on where you will be and how close.

35mm prime or 85mm prime would be my setup. 35mm for full body and close range, avoiding putting their legs or arms, etc, in the corners of the frame. 85mm for everything else possible to get the flatter image, but still with a close working distance.

This is why a lot of photogs use a 24-70 flavor zoom.

if renting.... use them on a portrait session prior... in similar light that you'll have at the gig.

I agree, 35 and 85. or just a 50 if funds are tight.
