I just picked up a slightly used Canon 24-105 f/4L for my 60D and I'm a bit surprised that my IQ with this lens seems very poor. My 17-40 f/4L and 50mm f/1.4 and even 24mm f/2.8 STM seem to give me better results. 24-105 seem grainy and soft. Please have a look at some samples. Picture title is the lens used. All images were shot RAW and untouched, exported as JPG in Lightroom.

I have this lens. I use it for portraits and fashion. It's been a go to lens of mine since I bought it. Your images looks fine to me. When viewing for sharpness in conjunction with portraits, I'm usually going straight to the subjects eyes. If I can count lashes, I know my image is sharp. I do find that f/4 is a bit soft for my taste so I'll usually stop down to f/5.6 or f/8.

The lens may be soft. Grainy comes from the camera or the user.

The first question, did it come with a filter? If it did, take it off now.

I've tried two copies of this lens, and neither really wowed me sharpness wise. Good for a cheap (relatively speaking), fast-ish zoom with IS....but it doesn't really compare to any of the other L lenses I've used. Looked through the images, they all seem about on par with what I've seen with both copies I had. They're not necessarily soft...but definitely not razor sharp either.

Most of the shots with the 24-105 are a bit under exposed and low in contrast, which will make them look soft and a bit grainy in the shadow areas. The one pic that is well exposed (against the stone pillars) looks like focus was missed... front focused.
Give it some more time. I use mine for landscape and studio and find it very well capable.

Maybe do a Micro Focus Adjust.

I can really tell the difference when working in Lightroom.

The first question, did it come with a filter? If it did, take it off now.

It did come with a UV filter. I haven't tried it with the filter off.

I've tried two copies of this lens, and neither really wowed me sharpness wise. Looked through the images, they all seem about on par with what I've seen with both copies I had. They're not necessarily soft...but definitely not razor sharp either.

Did you end up replacing it with a different lens? I had a chance to get a 24-70 f/2.8L for a few hundred more, I thing I might have been better off.

It will need high enough shutter speeds for people photos. What are you using? On a crop body, you want 1/focal length x 1.6.

I used my 24-105L at last years' Comic Con in NYC. Although my shutter speed was a bit slow and resulted in some out-of-focus shots, I was pretty happy with this lens. User error in my case.

Pictures look good with the 6D. I think that's my next purchase...

I use this lens with my 60D and I must say I get superb images; sharp and contrasty. Prefer this lens to the 17-55 from Canon.

You can get it now for a lot less than I got it for last year.

At first thought I would have suggested this too, but then I noticed the camera is a 60D.

I tried to check the focus using a focus chart. Seem to be working properly.

Do you have any full size samples you can share?
