Planning my lens foot replacement and flash bracket and decided ReallyRightStuff is the direction I want to go for my EOS 400mm DO II and 580EX Speedlight. Went to B&H and could find nothing ReallyRightStuff? ?????? Not good enough for B&H to carry???

Thanks for the feedback. The reviews were better than their main competitor for what I need. I do hope they take PayPal.

I'm lucky, my local camera store carries really right stuff. Not that I purchase RRS often because it's expensive, but they had my L bracket, and clamp ready to go!

Yes it would be very nice to be able to walk into a store and test fit.
Evidently (or my googling skills are lacking) no one has ever put a flash backet
on a Canon 400mm DO mk ii.
I'm going to replace the OEM foot for a RRS replacement, then one of their semi-circular
flash brackets can attach to the replacement foot. On top will go my 580EXii flash and
then onto a tripod with me sitting at the helm in a blind waiting out birds somewhere in
Costa Rica.
An uneducated guess is the larger the flash bracket the further my flash will be removed
from the lens axis which is a good thing. Only down I can think of is just a large less wieldy
mass moving through the brush.
Thoughts?

You could look at the 300 f2.8
From what i understand they are very similar in size and shape

I love their stuff but the cost and time it takes to get it to Canada is not the best. Still worth it.

Thanks for the input. I've decided to go with RRS again. Echo I looked at my 300 2.8 and low and behold its replacement foot is RRS so the flash bracket will be able to hop from 300 to 400. Both of those lenses are going on the trip so that will work out well. Also I wrote them and they suggested the size large.

For reference, good sir... Old image setups with the RRS system you were talking about...

Setup 1: 1D3 + 200 1.8L + RRS Medium Size Flash Bracket:

Setup 2: 1D2 + 400 2.8L II 'non-IS" + RRS Medium Size Flash Bracket + 10" Extender:

IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/9pynas (external link) Product Photography [EXPLORED] (external link) by Air Butchie (external link), on Flickr

And here's fellow photog, Rick Rose, candid capture of me using the 'Setup #2' with the 400L @ the LA Zoo, several years ago...

Any questions, please let me know...

:)

PS. On a side note, I initially purchased the 'large' size flash bracket, but the circumference was quite big... So I exchanged it with the 'medium' size and it was perfect... I can use it with my 200 1.8L, 300 2.8L, and 400 2.8L with no issues with space and size... Just and FYI...

OMG Butch!!!!!!!!!! Wow wow wow. So good of you to post this up and perfect timing as I iron out the kit. Looks like I'd be much better off with the size medium! Don't know how to thank you enough!
I'd not considered (didn't even know about) the extenders for the bracket=smart. Yes I need to study a wee bit more :)
Again, wow and a sincere thank you.
Robert

And here's the shot I captured with the the 400 2.8L II 'non-IS' (Setup #2) at the LA Zoo....

Lioness was backlit by the sun, so the flash was used for fill light... We were about 60-70 feet away... I think I did +2 stops on the flash to make sure there was enough power (for fill light) against the sun... And sure enough, it was!!!

:D

I got a large.... just in case I end up with a 500 f/4 II some day. It doesn't take up much more room than the medium in my bag. RRS suggested the large so I didn't buy it blind. I'm sure the medium would have worked just as well.

Edit: This is the one I got: http://www.reallyrightstuff.com …-Orbiting-Tilt-Mount.html (external link)

Phoenix you're not helping! HA! Well yes you are. The RSS bracket I'm looking at is this one:
http://www.reallyrightstuff.com …-Orbiting-Tilt-Mount.html (external link)
or the large....was going to flip a coin, but now I see your model and confusion again sets in.
What is the advantage of your complete circle model?
Also, these things look stout. Can you reach over and pick up the whole rig (camera/lens/flash) via these flash brackets?
Thanks for your input too :)
