For anyone who is supportive of shooting down drones: Do you support my right to destroy your car if I think you're trying to use it to point a dashcam on it through a small opening in my blinds?

Because I'm generally a nice guy, and no deserves to unexpectedly see my fat self in a state of undress.

That depends, is my car over or on your property or parked down on the street where cars belong?

Well, this is actually the main point. When you are outside, you don't really have an expectation of privacy if you can be spotted by people that are not trespassing.

you do if you are behind a tall fence and there are no structures or other high points that allow a "plain view" of you.

the law has not fully tested the situation when it comes to drones. I expect them to support privacy, not the drone operator, in most cases.

Heh, from what I have read (can't recall the source now, but it was reputable) in your country there IS a portion of 'air space' that you 'own', but it only goes to so many feet. Same article mentioned that the government is in the process of lowering such limit in order to accommodate ***drum roll*** surveillance drones!

I'm eagerly waiting for someone to shoot down a government-owned and -operated drone.

In 2012 congress allowed the US Gov etc. to operate drones in the US..

i like how you still haven't voiced an opinion. :D I could never be a mod.

i was the first one in this thread and put off saying anything as long as i could. Not that I'm wrapped up in this issue, but it certainly is a politically charged one right now. And I mean an issue not just with drones but privacy and cameras in general.

It can be hard work, if I posted all my thoughts on this, let alone the jokes it inspires (some are hidden in the mod forum) I'd have to BAN myself!

P.S. and just to be clear, I am in no way one sided on this, I;d be making even fun of the shooter, the drone operator, the local constabulary, and the "people: that made all the laws involved with drones and firearms,. this story is a total "Jon Stewart" turkey shoot IMHO.

I just went back over this thread. What we have here is a true American anomoly. Namely, four pages of political discourse in which nobody is accused of being a communist, a terrorist, or anti-American. How refreshing. We can, basically, still talk to each other. Perhaps someone should invite a politician. Nah, why ruin it now?

excellent point!

lets all meet in Kentucky and see if we can mediate an agreement with the knuckle heads involved with the problem.

the law has not fully tested the situation when it comes to drones. I expect them to support privacy, not the drone operator, in most cases.

But there are two sides. The first, and what most people seem to be commenting on is if the drone operator is really spying on someone. For cases like that, I agree, privacy laws need to be tested and I would suspect that the courts would support those seeking privacy.

Then you have this case where someone shoots down a drone with no proof that it was spying. Even in the first article, the shooter stated that he had no idea what the drone was doing and shot it down because of a hunch. In those cases, the shooter needs to be corrected.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I don't own a gun of any kind, but if I see a drone over my yard I'll start throwing stones and sticks and get the hose ready, that's for sure. My yard and house is nobody's business. And if it should be a repeat offender, I'll buy an air rifle with a scope. And some photographer pointing their lens at my yard repeatedly will get the hose as well if it doesn't 'smell' right to me. Sorry, didn't see you there ;-)a

Sooo..... If you next door neighbor is out in his backyard, looking into your backyard, it is OK to throw sticks and stones at him, spray him with your hose? What if he is just offering your son $50 to mow his lawn? Intent is irrelevant?

Sorry, but your yard, if I can see into it from mine, is perfectly legal for me to look into, regardless of what you are doing with whom, whether I do it from leaning on the fence talking to your son, or from a drone at 300 feet. The SCOTUS has repeatedly ruled that we (Americans) have no expectation of privacy while we are voluntarily exposing ourselves to others. Why do you think it is legal for you to photograph the goings on at a high-school football game? That applies as much to your yard as it does the local grocery store or school athletic field.
