I’m certainly no butterfly expert, but I did search “yellow and black” butterfly and the photo closest to mine was a female Tiger Swallowtail. Perhaps someone more versed in insects can clear it up.

Possibly a giant swallowtail (external link); the unusual coloration of the tails supports this, although the pictures I found don't show the dark red spot on the hindwing. Was it really big? Some butterfly species have small ranges–in my area, down to as small as one hillside–and I'm not familiar with which ones live in Texas. The state ag extension service has more information.

Whatever it is, it's pretty.
