Just spotted this in the Lens Rumors section. Thanks Dolina for bringing it up

Nikon came out with a 200-500/5.6 VR

- less than $1,400
- 2.3kg
- 4.5 stops of VR
- 108mm x 267.5mm

http://www.nikonusa.com …0mm-f%252F5.6E-ED-VR.html (external link)

Looks like a very interesting proposition. Granted, it's not a 600 at f/5.6 but will be very interested to see how it performs. For most users it will be most important how it performs out at 500mm and even with a 1.4tc

Seems to be a similar size and weight to the Sigma 120-300 so should be *just* hand holdable with an arguably better VR system. Lighter and smaller than the Sigma 150-600 Sport and cheaper too by the look of the Nikon website. That Nikon isn't pricing it really high is not promising though

Would like to see real world testing as the price is a great starting point

I'm with you on that.

I had a chance to play with on at the bird fair on Sunday and was quite impressed, focus was fast but they had it on a D4s.
The zoom ring seems to take a bit of turning to get from 200 to 500 .

With barrel zoomed out only adds 7.5cm to overall length
Only sticky point is if the TC 1.4 II is good to go or will only the newer III model work on the f/5.6 to make it f/8

cheers

Anybody have this lens yet? I know a guy on flickr who has one and he said it is sharp, focuses fast, and the VR is great. I think he has every Nikon lens out there for wild life. I asked him about the 1.4 TC...haven't heard back.

Will the 1.4 take the lens to f8? An f4 lens with a 1.4 goes to 5.6....

Don't have it unfortunately. Good to hear that it is a good performer though.

And yes, I would expect a 1.4 tc to take it to f/8. I'd be very surprised if Nikon designed it such that it would not physically take a TC

I had the Sigma 150-600 on my wish list until this was announced. Now this one is. And Fro Knows Photo did a review and was impressed with it. I just wish I had the money for it. vmad

Another report that the 200-500 works amazingly with the 1.4TCII.

My friend has this lens and is very impressed with. He said that the VR is much better than his 600mm/4 VR and is even able to take sharp pictures at 1/20s 500mm handheld. Very sharp, great AF and nice bokeh.

rushing products .perhaps one day the sigma 150-600 sports will be included in my shopping basket or one step up
