I don't know how it works going IN to Canada, but I've purchased 3 lenses from private persons in Canada (I live in US). Canada to US is easy, and apparently without duty. I don't know about the other way around.

Things may have changed, but not too long ago shipping TOO Canada could be a dicey crap-shoot. I had some very bad experiences myself.

Driving across the border and buying/selling a lens would be no problem. That is, if either the buyer or seller are close to the border and willing to cross.

I've purchased lenses, cameras and other accessories often from the US and imported to Canada, new and used. The only issues I've experienced had more to do with the carrier than anything else.

I also travel a lot, and have a good handle on customs when returning.

There is no duty on lenses or cameras (Photography and Optical under NAFTA), but that does not negate customs brokerage charges by the carrier. Major carriers can add $40 to $50 + for handling paperwork.

Most accessories have some sort of duty, plus brokerage charges. Canada duty fees can be searched on the web.

Sales tax will be charged on value according to delivery address.

On expensive items I select next day or 2 day shipping and this usually includes brokerage charges. A little more up front but no surprises at the door. Plus I get it quicker. Taxes will be collected at the door.

On less expensive accessories I request USPS and CanPost shipping. Brokerage, if charged, is $5-10. Taxes may or may not be collected, no hard and fast rule.

I do the same for my Jeep Rubicon parts and accessories. I've also purchased many wood products (finished and raw goods) that I just can't get here for reasonable costs.

If you live close enough to the border that a drive over is financially reasonable and a town on the US side is near enough, there are many companies that have "local address" services that will warehouse your purchase until you pick it up. These services are sometimes less than the International fees from carriers. You will still need to declare it and do the paperwork at the border, but still less than the shipper brokerage fees. UPS has a store quite close to me, about an hours drive.

I have not done this one myself, but looking for new rims for the Rubicon and the shipping costs are looking like this may be the way I go.

What we have to watch for now is the $Canada to $US conversion, the $C is quite low right now. You Americans may want to shop Canada to get some great savings. I noted last week when buying my new 100-400 L II that $C2399 converts to $US1818, much less than the $US2199 listed on B&H. $US381 covers a lot of shipping and other charges. On the other hand B&H lists $C2900 for the lens, ouch!

I don't know if this furthers the conversation or not. I have purchased 3 different lenses from 3 different Canadian private sellers. All three were shipped via Canada Post, with the item properly identified on the Customs Label. I got all 3 of them without incident, duties or any taxes due. Seems to me that IF we have a trade agreement, that should work both ways. I have never shipped anything TO Canada.
