So me and my fiancé are backpacking across southeast asia for 6 weeks and I need gear help. What would you guys suggest bringing? I will be buying gear specifically for this trip to go with either my 7D2 or 5D3 What would you suggest? Please keep in mind weight and I would love a broad range of functionality I will need since I will be doing everything from street to wildlife. I have 4 lens max as well.

5D3 easily. It's generally really dark in SE asia as lighting isnt good, you'll want every bit of high iso performance. My wildlife experience there was little to none, dont recall much of it (based on thailand and vietnam travels).

you probably dont want to pack too heavy either, heat and humidity are killers.

I was thinking my camera bag would look like

- Canon 24-70mm F/4 IS over the 2.8
- Canon 50mm F/1.2
- Canon 100-400mm MKii
- Canon 430EX

And then possibly
Canon 16-35mm 2.8L ii

Any suggestions?

A lot of Immodium AD or the equivalent, replacing it with Sam's Club brand, much cheaper.

I would bring the 5D3, long tele lens, and midrange lens 24-105 or 24-70.

I am heading to Vietnam in 2 weeks for a short 2 weeks trip. I have my old 1D4.

Have a safe trip. Good lucks.

You're going to backpack around SEA and you want to bring all that on top of your personal belongings? You're crazy.

SEA is very hot and humid. Even if you carry nothing, you'll sweat buckets. Keep what you need to carry to a minimum. Personally, I would only take one lens: a standard zoom, and enjoy the trip.

I wouldn't drag too much; way to hot and humid as mentioned in the above reply. I went to Asia on severatl trips, one around 4 months and another one 6 months in with a FF camera, a 135mm a 35mm and wished I had a zoom instead. Changing lenses wasn't fun. My recent trip was with a micro 4/3 Lumix and 2 tiny lenses; much better :)

Skip the 16-35...

Bring good hiking shoes and you'll be glad you brought the right gear. (Yep, that's a bit heavy if you'll walk for 8-10 hrs a day, but, if you're accustomed to it..why not?)

Hmmm, maybe Ill just go with the 100-400mm and 24-70mm. I feel like both of those will almost be necessities.

SEA is very hot and humid .

Depends on the time of year. Wet season yes, dry season not so. Seven or eight degree C nights are common from December to February in Vientiane.

You know that's an exception. Imagine the poor guy who read this thread and expect to be greeted with a winter-like weather as he steps out of the plane. The bulk of SEA, minus for its northern edge, is just plain hot and humid all year round, especially for someone coming from temperate latitudes. Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines... it's hot in winter, hotter in summer, and ranges from humid to too humid to bear comfortably. At least in the main cities. Higher up in the mountains, i'm sure it can be pleasant.

Right now in KL, it's 34 degrees C, 70% humidity and haze to top it up. Nights are not any better (the slight drop in temperature is compensated by an increase in humidity) :/

We need to find out where he's going and when. In the winter months, December to February especially and if he's heading inland and higher altitudes, he'll need to bring a jacket.

I froze my nuts off in Sa Pa in Vietnam in November in 2003. I wasn't really prepared for the cold.

Unless it is high in the mountain or remote jungle / forest at night / early morning, I have never experienced 7-8 degree C :(...

Reminds me when I was in Hanoi in February a few years back. Drizzling rain and 15 degrees. Not very cold in absolute term, but I wasn't prepared for it either. At least I enjoyed the hot pho :)

I'd go with the lighter, less costly and better 16-35mm f/4L IS in that case.
